How We Met

I had heard that we were getting a newbie today, but I didn't think much about it. Then, he walked through the door. With his dark brown hair, almost black, his bright blue eyes, and his friendly smile. He walked with confidence, no hesitation in any of his movements. He crossed the room and knocked on the chief's door. The door opened and he walked in.
    Five minutes later the chief poked his head out of the door and motioned me to come to his office. I went in and sat next to the newbie in front of chief's desk. "Detective Burn, this is Officer Nathan Burge. Nathan, this is Detective Kate Burn," chief said, and I nodded to Nathan, "Detective, you will be showing Nathan here around. Show him how things work around here," he raised his eyebrows, "Got it?" I nodded. "Good now get out, both of you," he said dismissing us.
    We walked out, Nathan turned to me with that smile of his. He held out his hand. "Nice to meet you, and please just call me Nathan," He said looking at me with his bright blue eyes.
    I took his hand, "Kate," I said without thinking. I rarely let my coworkers call me by first name. I saw the papers under his left arm. "Here," holding out my hand for the papers, "I'll show you to your desk." He handed me the papers. His desk was right beside mine. I should have guessed since it has been empty for months. I can't even remember the name of the person who sat there. I motioned him to follow me, "Here, right next to me," I gave him a half smile.
