"Grandmother, how do I look?" I asked as I spun in the silk dress that the mystery man gave me. I turned to my grandmother and her eyes were watery. "Don't cry."
"You are going to be leaving me soon, your the best thing that happened to me." She said sitting down, I didn't want to go to the ball, she was getting sick, I wanted to stay but she is forcing me.
"I'll never leave you, wherever I go, you go, wherever you go, I go. I promise." She got me when I was 11 years old, it's only been 7 years, but the best seven years of both of our lives.
She lost her husband at a young age and couldn't love another, her family disowned her once she did not marry another man, they were the ones that believed that a woman needed a man to lean on, but she couldn't marry, not after the love of her life died due to disease.
"I love you Grandmother, I'll be back before 2 in the morning. I'll wake you when I get home." Her grandmother smiled and went to sit down. Before I left I made sure everything was in order, I felt bad for leaving her to have fun.
We agreed that I would sell the jewels on the dress after tonight, neither of us worked, we gathered things ourselves, or whatever the mystery man brought us. He would bring wood, and things as such, and we had a garden in the back with vegetables.
I walked to the palace shoes in hand as my feet felt the moist dirt between my toes. I giggled as I started to run, I loved the woods, the way nature was so rich and beautiful. I reached the front and saw many people getting out of their coaches and fancy cars. I dusted the dirt off my feet and placed the silver sparkly shoes.
I walked to the front, a couple of people turned to me, probably wondering why I came out of the woods. The guards at the door allowed me in and I rushed to the bathroom, I locked the door. "I can't do this. I can't. These people can rip me apart in seconds if they feel threatened." I was never afraid of the people of this kingdom, but now being in a confined space with thousands of them made me nervous.
I smiled in the mirror and walked out, I'll just have a peaceful night with my grandmother. I was stopped at the door. "Ma'am may I ask why you are leaving?" The guard asked with concern, maybe I exaggerated.
"I just don't feel like I fit in." I whispered honestly and keeping my burning cheeks and head down.
"If I may say without offending you, but you do stand out. I don't think anyone has seen anyone as unique and special as yourself. You are a beautiful young lady." He said with a warm smile.
My body tensed, I never been complimented before, only by Grandmother, but that was her duty. "I don't know what to say." I pushed my hair behind my ear and stared at my unpainted toes.
"So innocent as well, people will envy you tonight. I'll be your escort tonight if it makes you feel better." I nodded my head, I trusted him.
He took my arm and led me to the open space where everyone was congregating and some dancing. "Care for a drink?" The man asked politely as he led me through the crowd.
"No, I don't think I am allowed to." He chuckled before leading me to the table full of food and drinks.
I wasn't very hungry, my body adapted at a young age not to eat so much. "Forgive me but I am not hungry. Is there any water perhaps?" He gave a quick nod and a warm smile, "Here this is sparkling water."
My nose scrunched up in confusion at the bubbly drink, did he take me as a fool and expect me to drink that and get drunk? "I promise it is water, just take a small sip." He said grabbing a brown liquid while handing me the clear fizzy drink.
I took a sip and smiled. "That is very funny and amazing,"
The man and I talked before we started to dance, "You are an amazing dancer, where did you learn?" He asked as the speed of music slowed. "I never did learn, I just followed your lead." He gave a hearty laugh which drew attention, I blushed and hid my face into his chest. It came to me that he may be the man in my dreams from the way he treated me, and greeted me.
