Five months later
Emily Johnston was crying. This is how this story had began and so it shall end in this way. Yet, these were not tears she was used to. Not full of self-pity, hopelessness, or pain. These tears were filled with gladness and thanksgiving.
The girl's watery eyes looked out over the uncomprehendible vastness of the sea and smiled, glad that Mrs. Smith had taken the time to show her this special spot, all those long days ago. The water looked chilly as the autumn wind swept over the waves. Emily kept her arms crossed and gripped her shawl tightly around her. Wisps of her brown hair were loose.
"I am sorry Mother, Father and Aaron. I wish now, more than ever we could be together again, to share in our faith." She said quietly.
Emily let out a sigh and kept her eyes trained on the water. She was not entirely sure what to call the emotions that were tuning through her. She knew anger, heartbreak, grief, pride, and sorrow all too well. But these emotions held longing, a sense of contentment, and anticipation.
Emily began to do what she had become accustomed to, counting her blessings.
"I survived the voyage. I have a new family who loves me, and I love them dearly. Victoria and I are close friends once more. I shall see Etu and Magena at the feast tomorrow. Someday I will see my family again."
With each blessing she felt a sense of warmth welling up. True, her beginning had been hard, almost unbearable. Her past was full of anger and hate. But now her future looked bright and very promising. Her mother's last words came back to her suddenly:
"No matter how this voyage will end I want you to remember today. Even in the hardest of times, you can find thankfulness. Continue to be my brave Emily and love God."
"You were right mother. At last I am thankful."
