You sat on the bench in the locker room. Your hands were shaking and your entire body was trembling. You could still feel your cheek glowing and you didn't dare to look at the bruises and marks on your arms.
"Hey, is everything okay?" Veronica raised her eyebrows when she saw you. She had just changed into her cheerleader outfit and she was fighting with a fillet and her long dark hair.
"Yes, yes, I'm fine." You wiped away the tears and you stood up to change into your uniform too, but Veronica curled her fingers around your wrist when you wanted to pass her.
"Who did this to you?" She spoke softly and almost hissed through her teeth. Her eyes went from the shadow on your cheek to the marks on your arms and back. "Did you boyfriend do this?" She cocked her head while she let your hand go again.
"No, no, I...." You stuttered and swallowed while you stared at the floor beneath your feet. "I don't have a boyfriend and I don't want a boyfriend either." You looked up at Veronica again, not sure if she would understand what you were trying to say.
"Then who did this to you?" She squeezed her eyes a little. If she had noticed that you were basically telling her that you were a lesbian she was not in the slightest bit shocked by it. "Your father? Your mother? Your sister? Your brother?"
You avoided her glance and looked around if there was really no one else in the locker room. "He doesn't do it on purpose..." You took a deep breath. "My father has a burn out and sometimes he reacts strongly to something really small, but he really doesn't want to hurt me. He just can't help it sometimes, when everything is too much for him to handle."
Veronica didn't say anything. She didn't interrupt you. She just stared at you and she dropped her jaw. "Ow, honey." She cocked her head and she placed both her hands on your shoulders. "No matter what problems your father has, that's not a reason to hurt you like this." Veronica's eyes locked with yours. "There is never a good reason for hitting someone and there is never a good reason for hurting someone." She paused for a moment. "And I'm going to tell him that if he really cares about you, he should get himself treated so this will never ever happen again."
"Veronica..." You took a deep breath. You shifted your weight from one leg to the other and a tear escaped your eye. "I'm sure things will get better again. You really don't need to tell him anything. He knows that he needs help and he's trying to get it."
Veronica squeezed her eyes and she straightened her back while she lifted her chin. "Do you promise me to tell me when he ever hits or hurts you again?"
You nodded. "I just don't think you can do anything about it..." You folded your hands behind your back.
"Don't underestimate what a person can do to protect those they care about." Veronica's expression softened and she leaned towards you to press a kiss on your lips. "I care about you and if someone hurts you, I'll find a way to do something about it." She nodded at you. "I promise."
