"Guys..." Veronica had her arms crossed over her chest and shook her head. "Who was in charge of buying the decorations this year?" She raised her eyebrows and a little reluctantly you raised your hand. "I already feared so." Her high heels ticked on the pavement while she walked towards you. "I don't want to be harsh, but those colors are not really a good match."
"V!" Betty interrupted her best friend and placed a hand on Veronica's shoulder. "I think all those colors give the tree something festive. It's cheery. It's Christmas not some high fashion event."
"Just because it's Christmas, doesn't mean you can't pick a certain style and theme." Veronica climbed the ladder you had just come down from. "But, with a little rearranging, I think we can turn this color blinding disaster into something unique and classy."
Betty rolled her eyes and she walked towards you. "I'm sorry. You did a great job, really. I like all those different colors and styles. There's something for everyone in this tree now." She wrapped an arm around your shoulder. "It's a tree for the students, not for the tabloids."
You smiled. "I don't mind." You shrugged. "I know Veronica means well and just wants the best for the tree and this school, it's fine."
"No, it's not!" Betty spoke firmly. "You were in charge of this project. She can't just walk in and take over."
"I'm not taking over." Veronica climbed down again and held a few different colored balls and ornaments. "I'm just helping out and giving input." She smiled and you smiled back at her. "You can't place the pink and red balls next to each other. Really, it's ugly."
"Can't you be a little more subtile?" Betty rolled her eyes once more, but you reached for Veronica's hand.
"What would we do without you?" You shook your head. "This tree would look like a total disaster." You wrapped an arm around Veronica's waist and pulled her closer towards you until your heads touched. "Well, captain Lodge, where should we place the red and pink balls?"
Veronica stared at Betty. "Come on. I meant well! I won't tell you to NOT put the balls in the tree. I'm just telling you not to place the pink ones next to the red ones!"
"In real life you can't just keep the people who don't really go well together apart either." Betty protested one last time, but Veronica reached for her hands and squeezed them.
"But this is not real life! It's a Christmas tree! We can at least make it look like we're not just throwing the balls in there without thinking about it." She pouted. "Please! Let me help!"
"Fine..." Betty eventually admitted. "Let's do this your way." She murmured. "But I still think they looked great anyway."
You chuckled. "Come on girls. It's Christmas. It's that one time a year we all collectively believe that peace can happen in this dark and doomed world." You wrapped an arm around both of them. "No war between B, V and me, okay?"
Betty smiled and she squeezed Veronica's hand. "You're right. Let's change the world by starting small." She looked at Veronica. "So, where should I hang this pink ball?"
