This was the fourth time this week I was in the bar after getting the news. The news being a card for my best friend's marriage. She was a marrying a man I didn't like but she didn't care about my opinion anymore. She knew I hated every man she dated. People ask why I care so much about who she dates. I say to them, "Well my best friend deserves better." But in truth, I'm in love with her. Of course, I would never tell anyone that. My phone buzzed in my pocket but at the same time, a girl walked up to me asking if she could buy me a drink. I studied her for a second. She was pretty but nothing compared to my beautiful Rose. Instead of Rose's long, messy, but natural blond hair her's was dyed a silver. I decided to check my phone as I politely declined a free drink. As soon as I unlocked my phone I was glad I didn't get a drink. My heart spluttered into a frenzy. Even though Rose and I have texted ever since we both got our first cell phones, yet every time I see her name pop up on my screen my heart acts like I'm running a race.
"Hey, do you maybe wanna come with Josh and me to a movie? We can pick you up at 7."
Go to a movie with her boyfriend and her? Be the third wheel? How pathetic. I wanted to say no but it's Rose. Against by better judgment, I texted back.
"Sure, I'd love to go to a movie with you. It's fine, I'll meet you there."
I got to the town's movie theater at precisely 7 PM. This theater had so many memories, some more memorable than others. I remember Rose and me going countless times as teenagers, and now as adults. A couple minutes later I saw Josh's car pull into the parking lot. Since the car wasn't far I got out quickly and raced to get the car door for Rose before Josh. I won, sending a smug look towards Josh when Rose wasn't looking. Josh knew I was jealous of their relationship. He also figured out that I was in love with Rose. Yet Rose still didn't get it.
Before I knew it I felt Rose's arm around my waist as we were walking, holding me in a hug as we walked. "I missed you, Robyn. It's been like three weeks since we've seen each other and you didn't call either." She faked a pout and I grinned down at her. "Sorry, I've been a bit busy. I missed you too. You can always call too, you know." She didn't say anything else, just hugged me tighter. Josh was already inside, ordering tickets. I opened the door to the theater for her. We bought popcorn, drinks, and candy for all of us. We sat down along with the others who were still flowing in. We sat up in the top row. I watched as Josh's arm wrapped around Rose's shoulder. I glared at Josh which only smiled back at me. The lights darkened as the movie started. I stared forward, even though out of the corner of my eye I saw Rose lean into Josh's side. My fists balled as I tried to focus on the movie instead.
As my eyes adjusted to the moonlight as we exited the dark lights of the movie theater, I hugged Rose tightly and said goodbye to her. "We have to hang out tomorrow," Rose said, pulling away. "Come on Rose," Josh called impatiently. "One second Josh. Can we hang out?" Rose asked, looking back at me, hopeful. "I'll try my best to free my schedule. Just text me what you wanna do." I said. Rose hugged me tightly. "I love you, Robyn." I quietly hugged her back. I couldn't say that to her. That's the whole thing that I'm trying not to face because I love her not like a friend but a lover. A lover I can't have.
