That summer, I didn't want to leave home. I didn't want to go to some random beach town five hours away. No, I was used to the quietness of the mountains where I'd grown up in. But, I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't know it was going to be a summer to remember.
My mom had come to me one day (rather, exactly one week after the last day of 10th grade) to say that I was going with my cousin Skylar to Dainsley, a "cute little beach town" (Mom's words) of California about 300 miles away from my home in western Oregon. For a whole two weeks.
Yay.
To be honest, the beach always bugged me. Kids splashing everyone whether they wanted it or not. Teenage girls with perfect skin wearing bikinis, something I'll never be able to do. Sand in places it shouldn't be. Babies screaming. Dogs yowling. Seagulls screeching. Middle-aged men in bathing suits, period.
Not my kind of fun.
So, of course, I was expecting the worst. But I should have just waited to judge the trip.
Because then I met Kai.
