Prologue
It was about two o'clock in the morning. Jimmy Siks Dee Forbitt was lying in his room, on a cruise ship, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean; wide awake for reasons he did not know. He could normally sleep just fine, but there was just something about this family cruise that seemed off, and it was not his lack of retro video games, to his surprise. He had expected to go crazy without his Atari 2600 or NES, but he was holding up relatively well without them.
It occurred to him that his lack of sleep was due to the strange feeling he had felt for his whole life. It was like a sort of enigma from within himself, that gave him a sense of significant power. It made him feel as though he could do extraordinary things with ease, but at the same time it felt somewhat sickening. He had always wondered what it meant, if anything. It hadn't been a problem in his sleep schedule for fifteen years, but now it was stronger than ever, and Jimmy suspected it was causing his insomnia.
Unable to fall asleep, Jimmy decided to take a walk, despite not being allowed to after midnight as were the rules of the cruise ship. He grabbed his blue jeans, Pac-Man shoes, and favorite shirt, a Magenta one depicting an Asteroids' ship firing three pellets into the mouth of Pac-Man. Once he was dressed, he swept his spiky brown hair away from his face, grabbed his key card, and left. Walking down the fancy, but dimly lit hallway.
After a few minutes of walking through the dark hallway, he decided it would be nicer outside, so he found the stairs to the main deck and quietly trekked over them, when he reached the top, he opened the door.
The stars were extraordinarily bright that night, and with the sound of the ocean all around him, Jimmy knew that going up on deck had been a good idea, he felt very relaxed, though still troubled. He walked over and leaned onto the railing of the ship, to try and make sense of his troubles.
Why did his parents plan this trip? Was it really because they had opened their five hundredth jewelry store, or were they just rich enough to do whatever they pleased? Either way, they were psyched; but once again, too busy to actually do anything with him on this “family” cruise. Jimmy thought about this, that perhaps this was one of the factors troubling him. He wasn't sure though, as his parents' neglectful nature never bothered him in the past, only now he couldn't ignore their neglect through video games.
He couldn't even bring his Game Boy onto the cruise ship, his parents wouldn't let him, they wanted him to spend some time away from video games. Of course they didn't realize that there was a huge arcade on the ship; the selection of games it had were all a little too contemporary for his taste, but he made do with them whenever he could.
After gazing at the stars for a while, Jimmy's strange feeling grew stranger. It made him feel uneasy, the same kind of uneasiness that came from having to socialize with others on a regular basis. Consequently, Jimmy was a tad anti-social.
Suddenly the ship started to sway back and forth, Jimmy grabbed the rail for stability, hoping that the sea would let up. Instead, a colossal wave came out of nowhere and pelted him. He was still on the ship, but had lost his grip now, and before he could get back to his feet, the ship thrust from another powerful wave. He braced himself for a collision with the railing, but he never hit it, as if it had disappeared. Instead, he fell overboard.
The ocean was surprisingly still, given it's recent state. The cruise ship however was moving, and fast. Jimmy called for help, but no one heard him, so he started swimming after the boat. As he did, the already at large strange feeling grew, but now he was in a state of shock, and every notion of it faded. Although he didn't realize it, the feeling was somehow helping him swim faster, his speed was remarkable. The combination of this strange power, and the startling stillness of the ocean, allowed him to move as if he were running on solid ground. But despite his greater speed, he wasn't catching up. After a few more minutes of helpless swimming, Jimmy passed out.
