“You have to be fucking kidding me.” Michael was staring down at Gavin, who had kneeled before him. He didn’t think it would happen this way. Weren’t they supposed to be in public when this happened? Or did it matter? Michael was beginning to question the expectations fed to him by the media. He supposed it was all the same, that the setting was only something to use for the sake of categorization.
The carpet against Gavin’s knee sent chills up Michael’s spine. “Michael…” His thick accent was whispering between his teeth to create the melody that could put Michael in a trance. “I’ve been waiting to do this in a more spectacular way, but I can’t wait any longer.” His hands fumbled his pockets for a moment, allowing Michael to breathe and realize that this is real before Gavin brought out a black velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal a simple silver band with a small black diamond in the center, a speck in the never-ending expanse of ring.
Michael choked back a sob, his various curses dying on his lips. It was beautiful.
And with Gavin in front of him, kneeling with the case in hand, Michael remembered something. “I’ll be back in a second,” he promised before dashing through their shared apartment to their equally shared bedroom. He dug through his sock drawer to find It. He thought of the three years of partnership between his boyfriend and himself, and the many smiles and tears they had shared. He pulled out his box, nearly identical to Gavin’s, and rushed back to Gavin, nearly crying as he ran.
Gavin was still kneeling, looking confused and embarrassed. Michael suddenly realized the rudeness in running off during a proposal, but decided that his actions were already making it up. He got down on one knee to mirror Gavin and pulled out his ring box to reveal a ring very similar to Gavin’s, the only difference being that there were three small diamonds rather than one and the diamonds were the traditional white color.
“Great minds think alike,” Michael managed to choke out through the oncoming rush of his happy tears. Gavin was staring blankly at Michael and what he was holding, confusion still apparent on his face.
It took a moment before a smile erupted on his face.
“Michael!” he yelled in excitement as he dropped his ring box and leapt at Michael, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend-becoming-fiancé. Michael sniffled appreciatively and took the ring out of the box. He slipped it on Gavin’s finger before burying his face in the space between Gavin’s shoulder and neck.
Gavin reached over and did the same for Michael. The two admired their new attachments for a second before Michael asked nervously, “So… That’s a yes?”
Gavin just chuckled and pulled his fiancé closer.
