I ran into sight just as everyone raised their guns. Marlow snuck out and pressed his sword to one of the men's necks, and pointed his shotgun at another. I crept up behind Slivko and did the same. I guess my pocket knife was enough to slit his throat, at least. He was trembling under my hands, but his grip didn't waver. I stared at everyone else. "I asked you fellas nice the first time."

Slightly more diplomatically, James said, "We don't want to fight you, Packard."

"This thing killed my men."

"Kong was just defending his territory."

"WE are soldiers," I could see the hand with the detonator start to droop slightly. "WE do the dirty work so our families and our countrymen don't have to be afraid. They shouldn't even know a thing like this exists."

In a shaky voice, James said, "You've lost your mind." A commonly known fact at this point. "Put that detonator down." Instead of dropping it, he only held it tighter. This standoff was not going to go well, whichever side ended up winning. All his men were waiting, still frozen. They shot glances Packard, waiting for him to quit. It was pretty clear their allegiance was wearing thin.

Packard paced towards James, completely unarmed but with the ability to blow up the entire beach we were standing on with the press of a button. I heard a small ding as the detonator powered up, and I closed my eyes. Just as he was about to press the button, Mason spoke up. "Stop. The world is bigger than this."

Packard laughed, half insanely, his face contorted in a snarl. "Bitch, please." He turned to Slivko and me. "Slivko, get out of there!" Like he was commanding a child to do his bidding.

I whispered in his ear, completely desperate, "You know it's the wrong thing to do." He turned slightly, and Marlow raised his eyebrows at him. I hear a single sniff, then he tensed up. I was just about to jump back when he suddenly turned his gun to Packard. I breathed a sigh of relief and released my hold on him.

"He said put it down, sir." Packard's eyes flashed and I could see his hand start to pull a pistol from his belt.

"Packard!" I called. "Come on, it's over." And it was- everyone was lowering their guns, coming back to their senses. All it took was one of them to take the first step. Cole was the last one to lower his gun, still a little bit reluctant.

It was a few seconds of calm before the water started boiling. It frothed and waves started splashing along the shore. Little bits of flaming seaweed rained down as a hole in the lake exploded. I could see a shadow, the white of skulls. Only it couldn't have been- it was far too large. Mm worst nightmares came true as a gigantic skull crawler burst form the water, letting out a hideous roar that made my knees tremble.

I said faintly, already backing up, "Running would be good right now, I think."

ITS THE FINAL BATTLE! Wait what how have I written this entire story in less than a week? This is nuts! Thank you so much for the love <3
