School seemed to be a drag as usual. Classes went on as usual with teachers talking monotonously and the typical hand cramps from writing notes all morning. It was just school at this point with nothing eventful stirring the day or making it better. The blaring of the final bell rang in my ears and I packed up my notebook from my last class. It was now time for my shift at the diner. However, this morning's events still shook me to my core. Why of all days did the howling seem to be closer to my house than normal? It's just unusual to me and the feeling of something coming to attack me didn't sit right in my belly. It made me question a few things. What could have attracted the wolves to come close to my house? Did I miss something when taking out the trash? Question upon question filled my mind and my brows furrowed. Something about the whole situation left a queasy feeling in my stomach.
Throwing my bag over my shoulder, I tucked my hair behind my ear and headed out the doors of the school to my car. Jumping into the driver's seat, I started my car and queued up my playlist. Maybe some happy music would brighten the mood. The gloomy grey sky loomed over the city as a pulled off onto the main road. I bopped my head a bit and tapped my fingers on the steering wheel. I had much better things to worry about than the wolves in the forest. Yet, I just needed to make sure I was being safe about things from now on. I should buy something for protection to carry.
Pulling into the parking lot of the diner, I parked far away from the entrance and grabbed my uniform. At least my job is not annoying. Walking into the diner, I smile as I see Joe behind the register and quickly call out to him, "Hey Joe, it's great to see you again." He smiled brightly and greeted me back with the typical "Hey Anna, glad you're here. You can start with being a cashier after you get changed." I nodded towards him and headed to the back to change into my uniform.
After slipping on my uniform, I walked out to the front. It wasn't super busy today. The cashier was probably one of the easier positions to have at this moment. I started by wiping down the dessert box and cleaning the top of my area. The diner seemed to grow cold as the rain started to pour from the dark sky. Thunder shook the small restaurant and left chills crawling up my spine. As I began to count how much was in my drawer, the bell chimed welcoming a customer. I quickly looked up and placed a mental note of how much there was and prepared myself to help whoever came in.
As if the diner could feel anymore cold than outside, goosebumps littered my arms as these men strode in. Their tall statures made them look intimidating. Their broad shoulders and rugged appearance could make anyone fear them. Their piercing dark eyes seemed to glue me in place, but I had a job to do being the front while Joe was cleaning. I put on my best friendly smile and greeted them. "Hello there, welcome in! Table for 3?" I said cheerily. Their faces didn't change in expression as the one standing in the front nodded his head to my question. He must be the leader as the other two waited for his command to follow. Reaching beside me, I grabbed three menus and motioned for them to follow me. Seating them at a booth, "Can I get you anything to drink to start with?"
Their auras screamed power right in my face. Each of them was uniquely different in their own ways. The man closest to me wasn't like the two that sat across from him. His energy was just a bit lighter than the others. As my mind began to fire off questions about who they were my thoughts were cut short when a gruff voice called out to me "We'll take three glasses of water." He definitely wasn't going to repeat himself. I shook my head quickly and ran back to grab the drinks. As I poured the water from the pitcher, I could feel a presence beside me.
"Anna, are you alright?" I visibly relaxed when the familiar sound of Joe's voice flooded my senses. Looking up at him quickly, I shook my head and gave a small smile. "Here, let me take this table and you can finish cleaning up the last section." He offered with a warm smile. I smiled in relief and passed the finished tray of drinks to him. Walking off in the opposite direction of the scary table, I grabbed a rag and proceeded to clean the tables in the back.
