I found myself night after night wishing, wishing for a better life, for a mother that would accept me for who I was, but like all wishes they never came true. I was stuck here with my mother who despised me and treated me like I was a nobody. My mother wished she never gave birth to me and my father left us because of me. Everyday my mother would mock me and would hit me. We had hardly any money so I couldn’t go to school. I had no idea how to read or write, all I knew was how to obey my mother. If I didn’t obey she would slap me across the face. All I wished for was a mother who would love me, care for me and treat me as if I was somebody.
Then one day my worst nightmare came true. My mother came home tired and angry and she started to yell at me saying that I was a worthless person who knew nothing. I tried to tell her that I wasn’t but she slapped me across the face and told me to shut up and get out of her house. I was left on the streets to scrounge around looking for somewhere to sleep and something to eat. I couldn’t find much, all I found was a dirty blanket that someone had chucked out and rubbish scraps. It looked like I was going hungry tonight. I set the blanket down and fell asleep on it. The next morning I woke up and forgot where I was for a second, then I realised I was in the tunnel of a train station, homeless. I had no where to go and nothing to eat. This went on for days. I would sit on the streets and wait for a miracle, for my wish to come true, but I knew that that would never happen. I soon began to rely on the food that came from the garbage can. As for my clothes I found some old ones that people had dumped in the bin and had no other choice but to wear them. One night I woke up and walked out of the tunnel because I couldn’t sleep anymore. I took a walk around the city and I stopped on one of the park benches. I looked up into the starry sky and at that moment I saw a shooting star. I decided to make a wish on it because it just might come true. I wish for a better life, a family who will love me, care for me and treat me as a person.
A few days later I was sitting in the park waiting for my wish to come true when I felt a hand softly touch my shoulder. I looked up and there I saw a woman who looked to be in her sixties. She asked me if I was lost. I told her that I wasn’t lost, I just didn’t have a home to stay in. She asked me if I would like a place to sleep and I said yes. She took me to her house and once I got there I realised that this place was too good for me. I tried explaining that to her but she would not listen. This old lady showed me around her house and after I had finished looking around she offered me something to eat. Since I had not eaten much during the past 4 days I was starving. After dinner she showed me to my room and gave me some of her sons pyjamas to wear. Soon after that I fell asleep on the soft, comfy queen sized bed. When I woke up I felt relaxed and well rested. I offered to make the lady breakfast to repay her for everything that she had done for me. I made blueberry pancakes and a cup of coffee for her. We sat down and ate, and the old lady asked me if I would like to stay with her because she was lonely without her husband, who had passed away 2 months ago, and was visited infrequently by her son. I answered yes because if it meant that I could have a bed to sleep on, food to eat and provide company for her, then I was happy. Finally my wish had come true. Maybe I was wrong about wishes.
