"What are you doing?"
Lauren jumps, Camila's voice bringing her back to reality. She's perched on the edge of the roof, her feet dangling over the ledge. The cement railing is just thick enough that she can sit without losing her balance and falling to her death.
"You scared me."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to," Camila approaches her, resting her arms on the cement ledge and glancing at Lauren, "What are you doing?" She repeats.
"Just thinkin'."
"About?"
"...I don't know. Sharks. Pink, cartoonish ones with silly hats. Yeah, those sound cool..."
"So really, you're just sitting up here, dangerously propping yourself over the edge of a tall building and scaring the shit out of me?"
"Aw, are you worried about me?" Lauren smiles playfully.
Camila scoffs, tossing her hair over her shoulder, "Pff... no. Just, maybe you should get off the edge..."
"You sound like Ally," Lauren rolls her eyes, "What the mom friend she was."
"Ew, don't indirectly call me your mom," Camila says without much thought. Without any thought, really.
Lauren raises a brow, "'Ew'? Would it be so bad to be my mother?"
"No, no! Of course not! It's just... I can't be your mom, when..."
"When...?"
"Nothing, just... never mind," Camila can feel her ability to speak without stumbling over her words slipping as she grows more nervous. She pushes herself away and heads back to the stairwell, "I'll, uh... see you for dinner, yeah?"
"Yup."
