Butterflies were gnawing at the insides of her stomach and this time it wasn't because of the cute boy at school. Tomorrow would be the the first day of high school for Arabella Edens and she was scared shitless.
The girl wasn't exactly popular, she talked to everyone but slanted more towards the nerds. Frightened at the thought of being stuck a nerd until senior year, she had tried to act a little more cool but failed entirely. Arabella quickly came to the conclusion that being herself was key and that she shouldn't change.
"Psst! Ara!" a male voice whispered.
Arabella swiftly turned and walked to open her old musty window. "Hey Drew," she tried to smile.
Drew had been her next door neighbor since they had been born. Their parents paired them together for everything, even though he was one year older than her.
The nice thing about their windows was that both their bedrooms were on the upper floor and their roofs conjoined so they could basically walk out and talk.
"So, the big freshie tomorrow huh?" Drew smiled, his blue eyes flashing with amusement.
"Just because you're a sophomore-"
"Don't worry it's not scary." he cut her off. "It'll be a piece of cake in two weeks."
"I sure hope so." She sighed, picking at her brown strands of hair. "I'm so scared Drew."
"Why? It's just high school you dummy," he chuckled at his use of 'dummy' he didn't want to cuss in front of the innocent girl.
"You don't understand, you're popular and cool." Arabella winced at how shallow she sounded. "I'm not exactly the queen bee of my grade."
"Oh-er- I don't think that matters Ara."
"It did in eighth grade..."
"Well, eighth grade is different from ninth grade girl."
"Wow you sure know how to make me feel better," she said sarcastically rolling her brown eyes at him.
"I don't know what to tell you other than I will beat up anyone who messes with you okay?"
"Thanks I'll keep that in mind." she winked at him, Drew only snorted in response.
"Do you want to have sleepover like we used to in like fourth grade remember?" he asked, his puppy dog eyes hopeful.
In fourth grade they started a tradition. The kids took sleeping bags and put them on their unified roof and slept together under the stars, they had never fallen off.
"What if we fall off?"
"I'll catch you." He said seriously as she raised an eyebrow. "Just kidding. C'mon we won't."
"I guess...okay. Let me be right back.
