Jonas held the weapon's trigger down, dropping more of them as they turned and fled. Even as the gun's supply of ammunition ran dry, Jonas squeezed the trigger as though it was his only link to life, his only link to sanity. That was how the relief forces found him as they flooded the square amid victorious cheers. Gunfire echoed further away as the Jacks were forced back. Jonas' hand was pried from the weapon's grip and he was hefted onto a stretcher.
"You did good, soldier." The medic called amid the cheers.
"I'm no soldier...just a farmer." Jonas mumbled before passing out.
