Chapter 6
I woke up to a high pitched laugh ringing in my ears. I opened one eye and looked down. Ginny was sitting at my feet, wrapped in a blanket and clutching the remote, laughing. I looked up to see Spongebob and Patrick on the TV screen,.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up." Ginny said, wrapping the blanket tighter around her shoulders.
"No, it's okay." I mumbled. I was cold. It took me a while to realize I was shirtless but when I did, I felt my face heat up. "What time is it?" I grabbed my shirt and put it on, avoiding her eyes.
"I think it's close to 4:00." She turned the TV down.
"In the morning?" I sat up and grabbed my cell phone. There were 2 missed calls and a voicemail from Mom. "Did you even sleep?" I asked her.
"I tried." She said, looking at me.
"Did you have a bad dream or something?" I asked.
"I didn't dream."
I stared at her eyes, seeing if they would flash red again or if I was just going crazy. Before I could react she leaned in and kissed me straight on the lips.
I didn't know what to do so I just froze. She stayed for for 5 seconds before leaning away.
"Um.." My mind was frazzled.
"I'm sorry. The way you were looking at me," she looked down, her face got red. "I thought you wanted me to."
"I didn't." I said, "I mean, it was nice. I just," I didn't know what to say. "Thank you."
She laughed and hid her face. I didn't have time to think of what to do next before my phone started buzzing.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Wow, you're awake?" Mom said.
"Uh, yea. Just got up." I said.
"Well, I won't be home until at least noon." Mom told me then sighed.
"I'm sorry, Mom. I hope you're getting overtime for it."
"I better be." She laughed, "I just wanted to let you know so you don't get worried. Love you, sweetheart."
"Love you, Mom." I said before hanging up.
I felt awkward. What was I supposed to do with Ginny? She didn't want to deal with the police, but she was a missing person. There had to be people out looking for her.
The thought of someone coming in, saying they knew here, claiming her, taking her away, sort of made me angry. I had found her. In some sense she was mine. I wanted her to stay.
Gosh, what's wrong with me? I thought. This girl had a family, a life. I can't hoard her in my house forever.
"Do you remember anything now?" I asked her.
"If I say no will I have to go with the police?" She said. She looked up at me and I couldn't look away.
I sort of felt guilty, like I was cheating on Stacie or something.
"No, you can stay here as long as you want. I'm sure my mom won't care that much." I said, feeling like a dumbass for thinking that whole Stacie thing just now.
"What about your father?"
My heart stung briefly, thinking about my father and his untouched office down the hall.
"He's not here anymore." I said.
"He left?"
"No, he was killed." I got up and went into the kitchen.
"Oh gosh. I'm sorry, Jake." She followed me and stood next to the counter.
"It's not your fault. Don't be sorry." I grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge and guzzled it. "Are you sure you don't remember anything?" I tried changing the subject.
"No. I'm sorry, I'm really trying but everything coming up blank," she said softly, "I don't even know how old I am."
"Well, I'm 17 by the way." I told her, sitting on a stool, "Try thinking about your last birthday. A party, a cake, friends." It was getting a little frustrated.
"I-I don't know," she squeezed her eyes shut, "I'm trying to remember." she barely said. "A swimming pool."
"So your birthday's in the summer. That's good, keep thinking."
"It's all blurry. I-I can't."
"It's alright. It's fine." I reassured her, reaching out to rub her arm. "I'm sure in a few days you'll start to remember everything."
She smiled and walking closer to me then hugged me around the waist.
"Thank you." she said then went back into the living room.
This girl was weird.
I went upstairs and locked myself in the bathroom. I turned the shower on and stripped down, double checking the door lock, then stepping into the shower.
The hot water felt nice. I just stood there, letting the water run over my head and shoulders, plastering my curly hair to my face and scalp. I needed a haircut.
I thought about Stacies party and if I should take Ginny with me. Maybe being around people will help trigger her memory. I didn't know. I just didn't want to leave her hear alone with Mom tonight.
I heard something, like the kicthen door sliding shut.
I turned the water off and got out, grabbing a towel out of the closet and wrapping it around my waist. I peeked my head out of the door.
"Ginny?" I hollered, stepping out and tip-toeing to my room. I put some jeans on and went downstairs, drying my hair with the towel.
I found Ginny leaning over the kitchen sink with the tap running.
"There's cold water in the fridge." I said, leaving the towel around my neck. I saw blood running down the drain.
"Are you okay?" I asked, touching her back.
"Uh," She hesitated, "I just bit my tongue." She said, rinsing her mouth.
It looked like too much blood just to be a tongue bite.
"Are you a hemophiliac or something? That's alot of blood." I started getting worried that she might hemorrhage in my kitchen floor.
"Yea. I have hemophilia. I'll stop in a minute, though. I'm sorry." She mumbled out.
I turned and saw the kitchen door slightly open. I closed it and turned back to her. The water was off and she was staring at me, water was dripping from her chin.
I freaked out. "Did you know your eyes change color?" I asked when they flashed red. I knew I wasn't going crazy.
"They do? I can't even tell you if it's normal for me, I don't remember." She looked me up and down, like a hungry pitbull. I felt a little shy and scared at the same time.
"They go from blue to red to blue again. It's kind of creepy." I said, trying to laugh it off.
"Hmm," she said, her tongue flicked out and licked her bottom lip. She came closer to me and sniffed. She actually sniffed me. I didn't know whether to be creeped out or laugh.
"You okay?" I asked, looking down at her.
"Yea. I just really like the way that shampoo smells." She smiled. "Sorry." she started backing away.
I grabbed her arm and pulled her back to me. I didn't know where the confidence came from or why I even did it after being so creeped out.
I bent my head down and hesitated for a second, expecting her to run screaming, then I kissed her.
