My still-nameless savior opened the door to the cottage and entered without a word. I looked over to the ghost, who hovered a bit behind me. Even when I was right next to her, I could still barely see her. There was a vague, slightly-darkish outline of her, kind of like a heatwave. If you stared a bit, you could make out the details of her face and strange clothes. I noticed in the shade that her eyes glowed a soft white.
She really looked quite eerie.
The door opened sharply. "Do I need to tell you kids to do everything? Come on inside!" The man growled.
"C'mon." I whispered. Together, we passed under the stone archway into the house.
Immediately, the first thing I saw was a bright orange-ness in front of my face.
"Hiyyyaa! My name's Melody and I'm a music fairy!" She cheered.
I couldn't believe it! A tiny, little fairy! The Barbie-sized creature had the biggest smile imaginable plastered to her teeny, dark-skinned face. The orange was from her flower petal-like dress and a kind of glowy aura around her.
"Of course, she means that she is a fairy that enjoys music. Fairies don't actually have denominations." Said a voice from the dining table.
A beautiful voice.
A beautiful girl.
Sitting at the roughly-crafted table was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She held herself with dignity, a book open in front of her. As she looked up, her glowing red eyes popped against her pure, white skin, which also contrasted with her black dress. It was fairly open around her neck, which left me in awe of her flawless skin and figure. The most beautiful thing about her appearance, though, was her hair. Her lush, jet-black curls that framed her perfect face and cascaded down her neck, dancing around her shoulders.
It was love at first sight.
"Alright, we got some new recruits, ladies. They're part of the family from now on." The only other guy in the room announced.
I sat down opposite the angelic woman without taking my eyes off of her. Hers were fixed on the ghost.
"Welp, it's intro time. You've already met Melody, of course." the fairly let out a happy squeal. "And this is Nicolette."
Nicolette.
"Pleasure to meet you both." She spoke for the second time.
"Both? I only see one!" Melody laughed.
"Look again, pipsqueak." said the other man. "We have a ghost in our ranks, now."
Melody squinted at what she probably thought was a shadow standing by the door. "Ohhhh. Sorry, I didn't see ya! What's your name?"
She was silent.
"Hello?" The music fairy asked.
"She's had a hard day, Mel. Give her some time."
"Oh, ok. Well, what's your name?!" She turned to me.
"Oh-um-er, James. Bentley." I stuttered out, blushing. This is how I act in front of the most awe-inspiring female on the planet?!
"Hi, james! I'm Melody!"
"Alright, calm down and help me start breakfast, kid."
The man and the fairy slipped off to a separate kitchen. It was just me, Nicolette, and Ms. Ghost.
After several moments, she spoke her third sentence. "I can just tell you what I am, if that's why."
"Why what?"
"Why you're staring at me."
"What? No, I wasn't trying to guess what you are."
"I'm a vampire."
"...oh."
"What are you?" she asked.
"I'm human." I answered.
She raised her eyebrows, staring pointedly at the hair poking out from under my sleeve."
"Oh, no. Sorry, I'm a werewolf."
"How long?"
"Three days?"
"I'm very sorry to hear that." She continued to read her book. I tried to read it upside-down, but the vocabulary was too complicated.
She must be very smart.
She didn't speak another word all through breakfast, yet she somehow held my complete attention the whole time.
