"I knew him more than most,

I saw a side of him, he never showed"

What A Shame, Shinedown

"Adam."

...

"You can't just leave him here, he'll die!"

...

"There's too many...surrounded..."

...

"You have to let me go, Adam."

...

"Wherever I go, I know you'll find me–you always do."

...

"I can't–I can't do this to you."

...

"We need to get him now! Otherwise he'll be dead before we even get the chance to bring him back."

...

"Adam!"

...

"You can't just say that and then leave! That's not fair, Adam." Max cried out in exasperation, his eyes glaring at Adam as the shorter man frowned deeply at Max's reaction, his heart racing beneath his skin from nerves. "It isn't fair at all, and you know it."

"I didn't choose to go on this mission, Max. I have to go, or else people will die." Adam shouted back, crossing his arms against his chest as he stared at the scowl appearing on Max's face, frustration seeping through the cracks of the walls he'd built. "If I had a choice I would stay, but even you know it isn't possible if we want them to be safe–to be alive."

"I know, I'm sorry." Max sighed softly, rubbing his face with his hands before allowing himself to glance at the hurt look on Adam's face. "I just–I wish none of this would've happened sometimes. It would save the stress as well as the constant worrying." Adam frowned and turned away from Max, his eyes closing briefly at the sting of his words before opening at the soft touch of a hand on his shoulder.

"Fine. You're right." Adam whispered, swallowing thickly as he turned his head to see the sad expression on Max's face, cheeks damp with tears. "Just forget I said anything then. Problem solved." Moving away from his touch, Adam walked away and towards the direction of the door to the roof, heading back inside the building with a slam of the door behind him.

..

Adam jolted awake, his breathing erratic as his heart thumped in his chest at a rabbit's pace, his eyes were wide as he struggled to calm down and just breath. Bolting up from the bed, Adam was quick to scurry to the bathroom, locking the door behind him quickly as he sat against the far wall with his knees to his chest, and his eyes squeezed shut. Every inhale was like knives stabbing into his chest, twisting and turning every which way. He couldn't tell how long it had been since he came in, the sound of light footsteps being heard as Adam wheezed from where he sat, shoulders shaking with quiet heart-wrenching sobs. A knock sounded on the door, quiet and almost curious as Adam struggled for a moment before looking up towards the door with blurry vision.
