Chapter 2: A split in the sky
The darkness seemed to have absorbed Dax and, well, absorbed everything. It was nothing like anything he had ever experienced. It was horrifying, there was nothing. Nothing in front of him, nothing behind him. Up, down, left or right. Just darkness.
"D-Dax...." He heard
"Grey?" Dax crawled towards the voice and hit a pole with his head.
"Damn..."
"Dax. Where are you." Grey's voice shook.
Dax reaches out and finds Grey's hand. Dax tightly squeezed it and huddled up next to Grey.
"We are going to be fine..." Dax whispers.
Then, silence. Almost complete silence. Dax could hear one thing: Grey's heart beating in the darkness. A grinding noise echoed around ForestFord, The light above them flickering. It stopped, and a few minutes passed. Again, the grinding started once more and stabilized to a gentle whirr, and a light turned on in the town, then another, then all the lights turned on, but the sky was still pitch black. Dax, unknowingly, closed his eyes. He opens then and looked at grey who was curled up to his side.
"Grey." He gently shook his friend
"Hmm?" Grey opens his eyes wide and pushes away from Dax "Sorry!"
Dax chuckles and looked at the sky concerned. A flicker, he saw a flicker in the sky. He stood up, stretching under the lamp light.
Grey stands up next to him, rubbing his own neck awkwardly. "Sorry..." He looks at the black sky, an awestruck look plastered on his face "Holy mother of...well shit... This is new...."
Dax looks away from Grey and up at the sky. "I don't think this is possible."
"You mean the entire sky going dark with no explanation to how or why? Yea that's accurate."
Dax glanced around at the other people drifting around the town, gawking at the sky.
"Well, no use standing here." Grey cracked his knuckles and started to saunter back towards the damaged town.
"What? What are we supposed to do?" Dax squints at Grey.
Grey shrugs, picking his way down the dim lit, decrepit concrete road into town.
Dax jumps slightly "Don't leave me here!"
Grey smiles and looks back "Keep up then."
Dax and Grey picked their way through the ruined town. As far as they could see everyone seemed to be fine. As far as they could see. They heard many distressed people around, often wailing to the dead sky. "Where did the sun go? Where are the clouds?!" they heard from one direction. "What if our power fails!" another person yelled.
Dax looked into the cafe, the glass windows had shattered, and the modern furniture was dispersed around the place. A few pieces of rubble still fell off of the buildings around the town. Dax gazed around the town. The town that he had grew up in was in complete disrepair. He heard a cry for help from his left and jogged over to find an elderly citizen stuck under a stone. He grunts lifting it off of them, pulling them out and supporting them. "You alright miss?" He glances at her. The elderly woman's voice was shaking and she stuttered "I-I'm fine young man... thank you..."
Dax helped her over the group of people who immediately started to patch her up.
Dax walked back over to Grey, his face suddenly became of a panicked tone as he remembered he had a family that he needed to check on before he cleaned up around the town.
