Lyndsey's POV

I am taking my time at my locker this morning because I am dreading Mr. Bryant's class. Lexi is rambling on about what her and her boyfriend, Todd, are doing this weekend.

"Lyndsey, are you even listening to me?" she asks.

"Uh..." I start.

She groans, "Honestly, what am I going to do with you?"

I shrug, "I'll see you after econ."

With that, I trudge off towards economics. I take a seat in the last row, hoping to go unnoticed by Mr. Bryant today. The final bell was ringing and Mr. Bryant begins calling the roll, but just then, someone slides in the door. It's Jackson.

"You're late, Mr. Wilde," Mr. Bryant states.

Wait, Jackson is in this class? The only seat left vacant is the one next to mine, so he sits in it.

He smiles at me, "Hey, I'm Jack."

I glance over at him, offering a small smile, "I'm Lyndsey."

"NO TALKING," Mr. Bryant commands.

I resist the urge to roll my eyes and return my focus to the worksheet in front of me. Twenty minutes into class, my phone notifies me I have a text, rather loudly I might add.

"Who's phone was that?" Mr. Bryant demands, zeroing in on me.

I'm about to confess, but Jack beats me to it.

"Sorry, it was mine," he says.

I stare at him wide-eyed and Mr. Bryant seems just as surprised.

"Turn it off," Mr. Bryant says, "And don't let it happen again."

He turns back to the blackboard and I quickly silence my phone before looking over at Jack and mouthing a thank you.

After class, I catch up with Jack in the hallway, "Hey, why did you do that?"

He gives a little chuckle, "He looked like he was planning to skin you alive."

He's right, Mr. Bryant had looked pretty murderous.

"Well, thanks for the save," I say with a grateful smile.

He grins, "Sure, but since I did save you from his wrath, can I ask for a favor?"

"Depends on the favor," I counter.

"Well, since I'm new here, would you mind showing me around town a bit? I'll go insane if I can't find something to do this weekend."

I laugh a little, "Sure, but I'll warn you small towns have a reputation for being pretty boring."

He chuckles, "I'm sure we can find some way to make it more interesting."

With that he slips away from me and on to his next class.

"So you're really going to do it?" Lexi asks.

I nod, sipping my milkshake. We are sitting in my favorite diner on second street.

"I'm so proud of you," she says, clasping her hands together.

I roll my eyes, "It's not that big of a deal."

She frowns at me, "Of course it is! When was the last time you even talked to a guy?"

I open my mouth to speak, but she stops me, "Greg doesn't count."

I fall silent; Greg is her brother.

"Exactly. This is major progress Linds," she says thoughtfully.

"I don't know; it's something about Jack, he feels..." I struggle to find the right word, "He feels safe."

"What do you mean?" She asks, her head cocked in confusion.

I sigh as I think about Jack, "He's different, Lex. I don't know how, or why, but he just is."

"Plus he saved you from Bryant," she reminds me.

I laugh. We leave the diner after I finish my milkshake and head to Lexi's car. She drops me off at home before starting towards her own.

My mom is standing in the kitchen.

"Oh, hey Mom, I thought you had already left," I admit.

She smiles at me, "My flight was pushed back an hour, so I thought I'd make you some supper before I left."

I hug her, catching her a little off guard, "I love you, Mom."

"I love you too," she says, stroking my hair.

She finishes preparing me some baked ziti before leaving for the airport.

I don't sleep much that night. I never sleep well when my mom is away. The next morning, I wake up early and make it to school with ten minutes to spare; I notice Jack's motorcycle in the parking lot as I walk towards the building. I wonder what he's doing here so early.

I make my way to my locker and text Lexi, asking her if she's close by. I get my books and shut my locker, revealing Jack leaning against the locker to my right. His presence startles me.

"You scared me," I admit.

He smirks, "Sorry, I just wanted to ask you what you were doing tomorrow."

I think for a minute; tomorrow is Saturday and I had planned a day in pajamas with my laptop.

"Not much," I respond.

"Well how about that tour then?" he suggests.

"Yeah, that'd be ok, "I tell him.

"Great," he beams, "Where and when should I meet you."

"Diner on second, noon work for you?" I ask.

"Yeah, I'll see you then, Lyndsey."

The day passes quickly and soon I find myself at home trying to decide what to wear tomorrow. Of course, Lexi is already there raiding my closet.

"What about this one?" she asks, holding up a ruffled purple blouse and dark jeans.

I shrug. She continues digging.

"Okay, what about this?" she shows me a light pink shirt and a lightweight long white skirt.

I smile, "Perfect."
