A few more boring classes and finally lunch arrived. After I grabbed my lunch bag from my locker, I met Julia at our usual lunch table. We sat with some other girls, but I didn't know them very well. Julia was more outgoing than me and she knew all of them. I pulled my sand which out of my lunch and started munching on it. Julia was telling me about her day so far but I wasn't really listening. I was staring at Hunter, who was sitting a few tables away by himself.
"Julia, look," I said, pointing at Hunter, "he's all by himself,"
"Are you even listening to me?" she asked.
"Maybe we should go sit by him," I said.
"You can, but there's no way I'm going to," she said, tossing her long golden hair over her shoulder.
I put my sandwich back into my lunch and grabbed my backpack. I walked over to Hunter's table, gathering up all the courage I had.
"Hey, can I sit here?" I asked him.
"Yeah, of course," he said, smiling, "It's hard being the new guy. I don't know anyone,"
"Well you've made one friend," I said, smiling back at him.
Suddenly, Blake walked over to where Hunter and I were sitting, along with Aiden and a few of her other friends.
"Hey new guy, I'm having a party at my place tonight. Wanna come?" Blake asked, sliding into the seat on the other side of Hunter.
"Sure," he agreed.
I sighed. Every guy fell for Blake. I didn't know what it was about her but she was irresistible to them. I watched as she twirled her silky blonde hair around her finger and laughed at something Hunter had said to her.
"Hey Sloan," Aiden said, drawing my attention away from Hunter, "are you going to come to Blake's party tonight?" he asked.
"I don't know," I said, still not giving my full attention to Aiden. Jealously was boiling in my blood, causing my face to become hot.
"You could show me the pictures from your trip that you never got to show me earlier," he said, obviously hinting that he wanted me to come.
"Yeah, I guess I'll come," I said, giving in.
Aiden smiled, and I couldn't help but give a small smile back. Even though he was dating Blake, he was still the sweet guy that I became friends with in kindergarten.
After Blake finished talking to Hunter, she and her friends walked back to their lunch table, including Aiden. It was just Hunter and I again.
"So are you coming to the party too?" he asked.
"Yeah, I suppose," I said, picking at my fruit.
"Okay, I'll pick you up at eight?" he asked.
"Sure," I said, surprised. We exchanged numbers. After talking to Blake, I didn't think Hunter would be interested in me anymore. But he still was, and excitement pulsated through me.
The bell rang and I stood up to throw my trash away. Hunter grabbed my arm.
"Hey, thanks for sitting with me," he said, grinning.
I smiled back, but then stared at his hand around my arm. It was freezing cold, almost like ice.
"Sorry," he said, pulling his hand away, "I'll see you tonight,"
I nodded and threw my trash away. I saw Julia walking up to me, so I grabbed my lunchbox and slung my backpack over my shoulder. Our next class was math, which we had together.
