Preface
Chessa was having a great day. When she woke up the green light on her phone was blinking, alerting her of a new text message. It was from her manager, whom she hadn't heard from in months, asking her if she could come see him at one o'clock.
So she had started the morning drinking tea with her parents, then she dropped off her baby sister at kindergarten and now, ten minutes to one, she was at Mr. Gordon's office.
Best. Tuesday. Ever.
"Hi Virginia," Chessa greeted the blonde assistant with a smile. "How's Michael doing?"
Virginia grinned back at her. "Nice to see you again, Chessa. And Michael is doing great, thank you." Her eyes were shining with pride as she spoke. "The doctors says he's responding to their treatment."
Michael was Virginia's thirteen year old son who was undergoing treatment for leukaemia.
Chessa squealed and reached forward over the desk to give Virginia a hug. "Oh my gosh! That's amazing. I'm so happy for you!"
"Thanks," the assistant replied. "But what about you? Do you know why he called you here today?"
Chessa shook her head. "Nope, he hasn't told me yet. I'm hoping for good news though."
Virginia placed her hand on her shoulder in a motherly gesture. "You're very talented, Chessa. I'm positive it's good news."
The black machine on Virginia's desk beeped and Mr. Gordon's voice rand out through the speakers. "Virginia, stop chit-chatting with Miss Wyatt and send her into my office please." Another beep ended the message.
Virginia blushed and released Chessa. "Get in there, tiger!"
Chessa laughed and did as she was told. Mr. Gordon's office was very impressive. Even though she had been there before it still came as a shock to see the extravagant furniture and multiple pictures were on the walls with Mr. Gordon and celebrities.
"Miss Wyatt." He greeted formally and gestured the chair in front of his desk. He was a well-dressed man in his late forties with greying hair. He gave off the confident persona of a man who knew what he wanted and got it every single time, but Chessa always sensed a loneliness from him. After all, he was unmarried and without children.
"Hi Mr. Gordon," she said and took a seat.
"Haven't I told you to call me Darren?" he asked her with a teasing sternness.
"When you start calling me Chessa is the day I'll call you Darren, Mr Gordon." She replied.
He rolled his eyes and leaned back in his office chair. "Let's get to the point."
Chessa straightened in her chair. "Sure."
"I've been your manager for the last year, right?" She nodded. "I can't say I've done such a great job. I mean, I haven't gotten you a single gig or even gotten you close to a record deal." She was about to protest but he cut her off. "But I think what I'm about to tell you will help change that."
"Really?" Chessa practically shrieked. Her brown eyes were wide and hopeful. This was a dream come true.
"Yes," Mr Gordon replied with a grin. "I sent out some of the tracks we recorded to some different people and one of them bit." He paused. "Chessa... you're going on tour."
Her jaw dropped. "H-huh?" She managed to spit out. "W-with who-o?"
His grin widened. "You're going to be the opening act for One Direction as they go on their world tour!"
Chessa's mind was spinning. She would be the opening act. It would be a world tour. Her head snapped up. "Who's One Direction?"
Mr. Gordon's grin faded. "You're kidding me? Do you live under a rock, Miss Wyatt?"
She rolled her eyes. "I live under a roof, silly."
"Miss Wyatt! One Direction are the biggest up and coming boy band right now! Every teenage girl wants to marry them!"
"I've never heard of them," she replied honestly. She tried to search her mind, really think if she might have heard of them somewhere. She came up blank.
Mr. Gordon sighed. "Well, you better get to studying them. This is an amazing opportunity."
"They want me?" Chessa asked. "For real?"
"Yes," he replied. "They want an answer today. Originally they had another artist lined up for their tour but the artist pulled out last second so they need an answer soon."
Chessa's shoulders dropped. Was she prepared to go on a world tour with a band she knew nothing about? Still, this was the only offer she'd gotten in a year and it sounded like a good one. Too good to give up. She took a deep breath. "I'll go. I'll do the tour. When do I have to leave?"
"You'll be leaving for London in a week."
