Lou Ellen wrapped her green and silver scarf close to her face as she stepped outside. The cold air hit her, forcing her to pull her jacket closer for warmth. She took a deep breath, watching as it formed a cold cloud in the frigid air. It was the monthly Hogsmead trip, and everyone was frantically running around picking up last minute Christmas gifts. But Lou Ellen had something else on her mind. The Yule Ball was coming up, and she wanted to ask her best friend, Miranda Gardiner, to go with her. You see, Lou Ellen had liked Miranda ever since they were nervous, tiny first years experiencing Hogwarts for the first time. Five years later, the girls were sixth years, and Lou Ellen was ready to finally confess her love.

She hurried along the cobblestone path, longingly searching for Miranda, her heart beat slowly rising. She swallowed hard, finally noticing her love outside The Three Broomsticks. A yellow and black scarf hung loose over her shoulders. A slightly wilted daisy was slowly slipping out of her long, shimmering, black hair. Her eyes smiled with kindness, and he lips formed a large grin. She was talking to their other friend, Connor. Gosh, she was cute. Lou Ellen inched over, brushing her mint green hair out of her face. She was actually going to do this. She took a deep breath and walked up to Miranda.

"Hey, Mir! Can I talk to you for a second?" Lou Ellen asked, "Alone," she added, glancing at Connor. She could feel her face heating up.

"Sure, Lou!" Miranda replied with a smile. Connor nodded and stepped away, leaving the two girls to their peace.

Lou Ellen exhaled, preparing herself. She looked up into Miranda's eyes and retrieved all the courage she had. "So as you know, the Yule Ball is coming up, and I was wondering if you'd come with me? Like as my date? You see, I've really liked you since first year and I just, I don't know. I like you Miranda. Very much. Will you be my girlfriend?" She blurted out. She immediately looked down at her feet, the embarrassment creeping up into her.

Miranda seemed flustered. "Oh um, yeah, you see, I um, I'm already going to the ball with Connor. I'm sorry Lou, I really am, but I just don't like you that way. You're a sister to me."

But sorry wasn't enough for Lou Ellen. It stung like a thousand bees stinging her at once. She was heart broken. The girl she had loved since she could remember had just rejected her. She was only a sister to her. That's all she could ever be. She just couldn't take it anymore. She bolted, tears streaming down her face. The wind whipped her face, stinging her soft skin, but she didn't care. She had to get away. She ran, past all the shops in Hogsmead, past all the people and trees, past the stone entrance to the school, through the halls, down the stairs, and into the small Slytherin common room. There, she collapsed onto the soft green bed and sobbed. She sobbed her feelings out. The feeling of rejection and sadness, but most of all, anger. She was mad at her friend. How could she just be so casual about it, reject her just like that?

"Just a sister," she spat to the empty room, disgusting rolling off her tongue. The tears kept coming, this time out of anger.

At this moment, there was a knock at the door. Lou Ellen fell silent. Another knock followed. The heavy wooden door creaked open.

"Lou?" a familiar voice called out. The rage bubble back into her. She needed to get away.

"Excuse me," she mumbled, pushing past Miranda. She hurried through the halls, her head down and her hands clenched into fists. She walked out the tall stone entrance of the school and onto the grounds. She rushed past the hoards of kids coming back from their fun days shopping and hanging with friends. She finally stopped, looking up at the tall, looming trees in front of her. The Forbidden Forest. The place everyone told her not to go. She took a long breath. This was her only option. She started walking, the cold air finally sinking in. She shivered, pulling her cloak closer to her.
Suddenly, she heard heavy footsteps behind her. She scrambled against a tree, holding her breath. A nervous heart beat started up in her chest. The foot steps got louder.

"Lou Ellen? Is that you?" a voice called out. It was Hagrid.

"Hagrid?" Lou Ellen whispered.

"Why are you here? Are you okay? Here, let's take you to my cottage," Hagrid said, reaching out for her. She reluctantly followed him into the cottage. In the light, Hagrid noticed that her eyes were red and puffy and her skin was tear stained.

"What happened, Lou?" he asked, a worried look across his face.

So she told him. She told him everything, back all the way to first year when she first fell in love with the girl. Hagrid sat there for a moment in silence, soaking up what she had said. Then he replied. He said "Heart break can be hard, I know. But you can get through it. Imagine it from Miranda's point of view. She probably feels awful."

Lou Ellen though about this. She still couldn't forgive Miranda. But maybe it was possible in the future.
