If you didn't know what over the garden wall was, I suggest watching this.
It's very Amazing... and pretty much the first fandom I ever joined since I was about 10-12. And God the soundtrack, the story. It's just... amazing, so please go watch it if you have time or want to XD..

My favorite characters are greg, the beast, Wirt, and the frog(greg gave the frog to many times, so I just called the frog, the frog))

also in the fandom, (if you watch all the episodes, this'll make sense)
Beast!wirt is basically, wirt who sold his soul for his brother to the beast(the beast has a Lantern whoever he makes a deal with, has that Lantern the Lantern keeps the dead, living spiritually, but we found out that isn't true.

The beasts 'soul' is in the Lantern keeping him from dying,
So the fandom, made an alternate verison.
Where wirt, makes a deal with the beast...
To wonder the forest and taking people's soul, but here's the twist.
The trees, have branches that after the beast or in this case wirt turns the childern lost soul into Edelwood.. and the black oil from those branches fuel the Lantern: the beasts soul.

Somehow in the alternate, beasts an wirts soul are connected so if the Lantern goes out, they both die.
