Chapter 1
"Eyes up!" My dad says right before I jump the 5-foot vertical, the last jump of my course. Midnight gracefully jumps over it with room to spare. "Good job Isabel!" I hop off of Midnight and walk his huge, sweaty body over the the hose. I spray him down, then use the sweat-scraper to get rid of all the extra water on him.
A slight nudge on my pants pocket from Midnight reminds me to give him a mint for his good behavior. I always carry mints in my pocket and he seems to know that from all of the years of watching me take them out, because he always lets me know he wants one.
I quickly walk him to his stall because I have loads of homework to do. I lead him in, turn him around, and fill up his feed bucket with fresh, sweet oats and give him water. Midnight loves their flavor.
"Isabel!" my Papa yells from inside the house. "Come do your homework!" I tell him OK and run across our farm and into the house.
