Zack's P.O.V
Aurora looked at our bedroom door sadly, jumping slightly when a loud crash sounded out from downstairs. She looks back at me trying to force a smile.
"Where the fuck is that girl?!?!" Our prick of our father yells from downstairs. Aurora looks at the doorknob before slowly turning it.
"No wait!" I whisper-yell, "Let me go this time. I can take it. I'll be okay. I promise"
"No Zack. No fucking way. Stay here." Aurora replies sternly, opening the door and shutting it. I hear wild laughter from the son of bitch that is my father when the sound of Aurora's thin body hitting the floor is heard.
The house is silent apart from the sound of our father hitting my little sister. She remains silent every time , her making noise only made the beatings worse. All of the sudden I hear my sister scream, which means he burned her.
Anger fills me, knowing that she'll have another permanent cigarette scar on her body for the rest of her life. I almost go out there and punch the son of a bitch in the jaw, but I didn't. I sat against the door, crying my eyes out. And I'm not even the one getting beat.
After a couple minutes of my parents shouting at each other, Aurora is knocking on the door. I open it insantly and she falls on to me. I catch the light girl easily, and carry her over to our shared mattress on the floor.
I take her scar littered arm in my hands and stare at the burned flesh. How? Just how could they be this cruel? I sigh and lay next to the younger girl and pull her close. "One day we will get out of here." She whispers against my chest.
"One day." I repeat. I look down at the frail girl in my arms and frown. She doesn't deserve this. I'm her older brother I'm supposed to protect her. Well step-brother and I'm only older by 6 days.
While I'm trying to fall asleep I hear police sirens getting closer to our shithole of a house. Closer..Closer..Closer..They get so close that Aurora sits up and looks out our window.
"Zack..The police are outside..Shit the police are outside.." She says with uncertainty, her busted bottom lip poking out.
Our door busts open by none other than our mother her eyes wide, looking more sober than ever. "Get in the closet now. The cops are here." She whisper-yells, looking worried. I would have keep my ground but she held her belt in her hand. She never hit either of us, but I didn't want to find out if she would.
So Aurora and I scrambled into the closet and shut the door a moment too late. A female police officer pushes past my mother and barks, "Who's there?" After a moment I nor Aurora moved, she pushed open the closet door and gasped. She oddly pulled us into her arms.
"You're safe now. Oh lord, you're safe now." She says, pity lacing her voice.
After our parents were in handcuffs and being towed away in police cars, Aurora and I are sat in the back of our new social worker's car, listening to the ramblings of him. Aurora is wearing my hoodie, tugging at the sleeves nervously. I don't think I'll be getting that back anytime soon.
Aurora and I perked our heads up when our social worker, Sid, said "Don't worry kids, you'll be in safe foster home tomorrow."
"Safe? I don't even know what safe is anymore.." Aurora whispers to me, looking at me with tears in her eyes.
"I don't know either.." I whispered back, trying to remember the last time I felt safe.
