Chapter 1
KELLY
Welcome to KGB Academy, Where the End of Your Life Begins
"Come on Max!" I laughed as I waited for him to catch up.
You see, Max was kind of slow on his feet. But he can be fast when he wants to.
Like on Black Friday, he tore through the whole Target store and through the angry mob of Directioners to get Midnight Memories.
"Hang on Kel!" He yelled. "Don't go too fast." He muttered under his breath.
I threw my head back and stomped, groaning, " UGH! You are so slow Max Taken."
As he ran his hood fell off, revealing his short, slightly spiky blond hair.
"Oh." He flipped the hood back on.
"Why do you always wear jackets?" I asked, I have always wondered that. "Even in the summer! Come on man! We live in Florida!"
He was finally next to me, "I just do."
And we walked the rest of the way in silence.

We made it to the state penitentiary--I mean, school--early.
It looked like any normal middle school. Red bricks, rusted railing, and a sign in the front lawn displaying the school agenda.
On the sign was the school's name, KGB (Kathy Grace Bitters) Academy. And the school's motto--Where the end of poor education, begins.
Or as Max and I say it, Where the end of your life begins.
We went to the 8th grade hall and sat outside our homeroom class-Math, Mrs. Garbonza. A young, pretty Italian-Hispanic woman who people always label as a witch.
Max and I don't call her a witch. Actually Mrs. Garbonza is probably the best teacher I've ever had.
She doesn't call me a demon, she doesn't make rude comments about my mother and grandmother being devil worshipers. And she doesn't call Max "The Devil's Boy".
I looked over at Max, who was drawing despite the bitter February cold that always felt welcome in the halls and classrooms.
I leaned in to get a better look, "What'cha drawin'?" I asked.
Max quickly tilted his sketch pad away from me. "Ah-oh. Oh i-it's nothing."
That's when I gave him my famous 'Huhun-I-Believe-You-So-Why-Don't-You-Show-Me-If-It's-Really-Nothing?' look.
But before I could say anything, a blur ran by and snatched Max's drawing pad.
Garry Ryaneger. I thought. Doesn't he have anything better to do?
Max stood up, with a look saying, I am so tired of doing this.
"Give it back, Ryaneger." He said, his hand out to reclaim his book.
"No." Ryaneger said. "Now let's see what you are drawing today Taken." He looked at the page and his eyes widen and mouth opened in laughter.
"Whoa Taken! I haven't seen one of these since......since..........."
"Bad memory hu? I hear that's a side effect of football." Max said, his expression so cool and calm. If it weren't for his quick wit and cleverness, this boy would have been dead by the 3rd grade.
"NO! And I was going to say since last Monday! When your girlfriend here" He said the word as if it were a joke. "Was out and couldn't see it."
I looked back and forth between the boys. Did he just call me Max's girlfriend? Oh, he was going to pay for that.
I marched up to Ryaneger, "Listen here pal. I'm gonna-" Max held me back with one hand.
"No Kell, he's not worth it." Max's voice was so calm, it was frightening.
Ryaneger's friends ran over.
"Ooh! Tryina stand up for your boyfriend Falls?" The big blond one, Gatsby, I think they call him, laughed.
"Shut up Gatsby. Or I'll tell your mom who really ruined those customer's breakfast." I threatened.
Gatsby gulped and backed up, his hands up in defense. "Hey now, th-there's n-no n-need for t-t-that, kay? W-we're all friends here, right?"
I rolled my eyes and groaned. I help this kid's mom out with her cafe on the weekends and days when we don't have school. And recently, Gatsby, Ryaneger, and the other followers of the evil, tormented a family while they were trying to have a nice family breakfast. But I saved Gatsby's butt by taking the blame. His mom was too smart to believe it was me. But whatever.
"Whatever." I grabbed the sketch pad from Ryaneger and walked back with Max to our seats against the lockers.
When we sat back down, Max shoved the paper in his bag and didn't talk to me-much less look at me-for the rest of the morning.

I couldn't pay attention in homeroom today because I kept wondering what Max's drawing could have been.
Not to mention that all the numbers and words just jumbled together cause I have dyslexia.
"Ms. Falls?" Mrs. Garbonza called from the front of the class. "Would you like to answer the problem?"
"Um....N-no, Mrs. Garbonza." My eye wandered to a certain brown haired boy sitting next to me. "But.....I think Mr. Ryaneger would love to answer it."
Ryaneger looked at me with his eyes and mouth wide open.
"Ah yes. I think Mr. Ryaneger should answer this one. Since his grades are way behind." Mrs. Garbonza smirked.
You know how I said she was my favorite teacher I have ever had? Yeah. Now you know why.
"I'm going to get you for this Falls." Ryaneger said through his teeth.
"Garry? That doesn't sound like the answer to me."
"Oh, sorry Mrs. G. Um......The slope of the coordinates -4,7 and 3,-5 would be positive."
"Yes. Yes it would be."
Mrs. G turned back around and wrote 'positive' on the board.
I slumped back in my chair and looked over at Max, who was drawing furiously.
I just wish I knew what it was.
This is all so strange to me. Secrets, that is. They are a foreign concept.
Why? Well because Max and I never keep secrets from each other! Ever! We're always so open and honest with each other. But I guess not this time.
So.......what do you guys think? Are you excited? AHHHH!!!!!!!! Sorry. I just love that I'm making something original that is inspired by one of my favorite things! So, tell me if you're liking Max and Kelly so far. KayKay, bye!
