Through the horizon, a helicopter cuts its way across the orange sun rays with loud whoops of the propellers. Inside are three anxious men waiting their assignment and each are shaking with subconscious fear. The aircraft lands roughly on an open field and out rush the soldiers through the chaos of the war. There are pieces of wreckage from the camp base scattered across the floor and small fires, left over from the explosion, are still burning. The three men waste no time and march quickly to where one of the last camps are stationed. Inside, are more guns then they can imagine, which they will need to use if they wish to get out alive.
Outside there is noise and one of them peeks outside to see who it might be. He’s taken out by an assassin and he goes down with a quiet thud. The other two men have no idea what is awaiting them outside so they take their time. But that’s okay; their opponent knows how to be patient. Eventually, one of the soldiers goes out to look for their teammate only to find his dead body on the ground. He can’t even react when the assassin gets to him first with the bullet from his gun. The last soldier is just finished stocking up with supplies when he realizes someone must be outside. Fully armed with guns, he jumps outside alert and ready. There’s movement in the trees and he goes to shoot, but the assassin is quicker and he smiles in victory as the Russian soldiers and their camp bases have all been annihilated.
It’s amazing what a six-year-old boy can do when he’s alone with his toys.
"I’ve got to stop letting you watch those action movies with your father." His mother tisks to herself from the kitchen counter.
The little boy sits in the living room, with his legs folded underneath him, and makes gunshot noises to go along with the war he’s fighting with his action figures in his mind.
"Oh, my." His mother calls. Her inflection makes the little boy look up. She is turned away from him and looking out the window.
"What?" He asks.
"The snowbirds are here."
"The what?"
She smiles. "The snowbirds."
