Andy stayed close to me, keeping a hold of my hand with his own. I kept my grip on his hand gentle but firm, keeping my eyes on our surroundings and the wolves. They were walking us towards the center of their pack, where the Alpha supposedly was awaiting our arrival.
The group guiding us were around us in a circle, leaving little distance between them for us to run. I trudged along slowly, trying to prolong the time it took to arrive so I had a longer period to devise a plan. I subtly shifted my eyes to the guards on either side of me. All of them looked lean, a few bulkier than others. The one on my left didn't look as buff as the others, perhaps I could use that to my advantage.
I looked forward again, trying to keep a steady pace while concentrating on mind linking Andy.
'We can't let them take us to the Alpha, Andy. I'm going to start a fight - once they're distracted. Run.'
I could see Andy's face turn towards mine as he received my message. I could tell he was trying to get into my head but I'd already blocked him out.
I slowed my pace even further, causing one of the wolves behind me to stop abruptly to avoid walking into me.
"Hey why-" Was as far as he got before I swung my backpack in his direction. I shoved the thinner man on my left and pushed Andy in the direction of the gap I made, yelling at him to run. I started after him but it didn't take long for any of the wolves to recover from my surprise 'attack' and begin their chase.
My breath was coming out in harsh pants and my heart thumped wildly in my chest, adrenaline pushing my legs to run away from the danger behind me. Andy was slightly in front of me, running as fast as his little legs could carry him. I could hear the wolves gaining on us, and made the mistake of turning around to see the distance between us. Two had shifted into their wolves and were sprinting towards me with their teeth bared.
I turned around just in time for my body to collide with a thick tree.
Ouch.
I fell flat on my backside, my head spinning from hitting the tree as I stumbled back to a sitting position and attempted to stand.
"Don't move!" I could hear a voice yell. My vision was showing double as I struggled to comprehend that the wolves and men had caught up to me and were closing in.
I fell again, my vision spinning terribly as my head began to pound. I forced myself up, pushing my legs to run where I thought Andy was. I found it difficult to focus, my surroundings split in two as I ran on with unstable legs.
I heard one of them growl from behind me, their voices like an uncoordinated choir in my disoriented mind. I felt one of them tackle me from behind, pushing me down with them to the ground.
I let out a groan from the harsh landing, trying to wriggle my way out as the others started helping him to restrain me.
"We've got her, grab the boy!" One of the men shouted.
I fought against them as two grabbed one of my arms each, pulling me back in the direction of the pack. I flung myself in every direction and tried yanking my arms out of their grip, but it was no use. They simply tightened their hold.
I looked over my shoulder to see where Andy was, if he'd gotten away. A cry filled the air and I froze up, knowing it was Andy. The men forced me forward but I started digging my heels into the ground, fighting harder to try and get to Andy.
A few of the pack wolves walked out from behind some of the trees, one holding a squirming Andy tightly in his arms as he wriggled furiously.
"Let go of me!" I screamed, infuriated with the guys manhandling.
