Whenmy alarm rang on Sunday morning, I jumped out of the bed and wentstraight into the bathroom. It was four in the morning and I wasalready smiling. Enfys had been tossing and turning all night andwhen I came back in the room she moved again. "Enfys" Iwhispered. She moaned. "Enfys, wake up we have to go to England."My girlfriend shot up, her hair ruffled and her eyes tiny. "Goodmorning", she croaked and threw the covers back. "We are goinghome together", she said and I smiled at her. She was adorable andreally cute with her bedhead. I pecked her on the lips and smiled."You are adorable", I whispered and drew open the curtains. Enfyshissed and I laughed. "There is no sunlight yet you goof. I'mopening the window. She shrugged. "That's just what you do whensomeone opens the curtains and you are still in bed."
"Siria? Are we walking to the right gate?" I looked at her, bewildered. "Idon't know, you tell me! You've made this journey before, Ihaven't. " Enfys nodded, "Yes but never alone!" Sighing, Itook out my ticket. "It says 23 A", I read and looked up toEnfys. She shrugged. "I guess this is the right direction then",she pointed to a crowd standing on our right side. "Wha-", Ibegan but then I saw what was behind that crowd. A hot-dog stand."Are you already hungry!? We just ate?" Enfys shrugged again. "Nobut I wanna eat." I took a deep breath and let my bags fall to theground. "Okay, well, leave your things here, I am not standing inline with you." Enfys grinned. "Thanks Babe." I smiled backand sat down. Crazy girl.
Fiveminutes later, Enfys was happily munching away on her hot dog and Iwas impatiently drumming my fingers on the suitcase. "Enfys", Ibegan, but she interrupted me immediately. "I know, I know, thegate opens soon I am nearly done." I wanted to answer that halfwaythrough wasn't "nearly done" but closed my mouth when I sawthat she was indeed taking her last bite. "You eat pretty fast,Enfys." She jumped up and looked at me. "Duh - That's notnews." She was currently wiping her hands on her sweatpants andgrinning in my direction. I just sighed and got up pulling my bagpack with me. "Let's go", I said and made an urgent handmovement in direction gate. Enfys murmured something under her breathand I was glad I didn't hear it. The flight attendant was patientlyawaiting us and I hurried to give her the plane ticket. "Rowfourteen seat A and B, pleasant journey", the woman said and gaveus one of her fake smiles. She was worn out and she looked tired. Iwas tired, too. Glancing down to my wrist, I saw I had been awake formore than 7 hours and it was only ten o'clock. "I am hungry",I stated and Enfys looked at me incredulously. "What? Now youdecide to say something? Why didn't you take a hot dog back at thethingy?" I shrugged. "I wasn't hungry then", she raised hereyebrows. "But you are hungry now?" "Yeah", I said. "Huh."I took her hand with my free one.Everythingabout planerides sucks, except maybe for the clouds Everything isso cramped and I don't like having to ask three people to let megot to the bathroom. But in the end, I didn't mind much, after all,I was going on vacation with my girlfriend! Enfys was holding my handand drawing little circles on it with her thumb. I laid my head onher shoulder and squeezed her hand.
Enfysfell asleep quickly after that and I was stuck in an uncomfortableposition. Thankfully I had an excuse to wake her when the flightattendant brought us some more drinks.
Waitingfor our luggage was annoying too. Especially since I was trying notto pee my pants. Enfys was laughing at me and jumping up and down inexcitement. Gosh,Ithought, Ishould have slept some more too. Iwas still nervous and hoped they would all like me. The longer theband kept passing without our bags the longer I wanted it to.
EventuallyI could see my suitcase and I grew more nervous every second. Itnearly passed us but I quickly grabbed it. Enfys' three bags cameout quickly after and I took one since she couldn't possibly carryall three of them. "Are you excited?", she asked me and I made an"uh-huh" noise. She laughed lightly. "Siria, don't worry. They will like you." I pressed my lips together and nodded. Enfyswalked in front of me and when she stepped over the exit line she lether bags fall and ran towards a couple that was waving in ourdirection.
Itried moving the four pieces of luggage by myself and just as Istumbled over one of them, Enfys' stepmom appeared next to me."Hello", she smiled and took a handle, "My name is Gwendolyn. You are Siria, right?" I smiled back, "Yeah", I said taking thehand she was offering. "Thank you for letting me stay at yourhouse." She laughed. "I thought this was a punishment for you?"I shrugged. "Not really, I welcome the break." "I'm not sureabout the break though, you two will be in charge of the chickens."I looked at her and raised an eyebrow. "I think I can handle a fewchickens." Gwendolyn giggled. "We'll see. Enfys! Say hi!" Wewere walking towards Enfys and her father. Enfys turned around andlaughed. "I didn't forget you, Gwen, I swear!" With a rushed"how are you?", Enfys threw herself in Gwendolyn's arms.
Ismiled lightly at the sight of Enfys. She was so happy and I couldfeel the butterflies in my stomach. She was amazingly beautiful andher smile made me want to smile too.
"Letsgo, we have a lot to talk about and a hot dinner waiting for us." Iheard my stomach grumble and welcomed the thought of food and a warmbed. Enfys yawned. "I am tired", she stated and Gwendolynlaughed. "Aren't you always?", she asked and I giggled. Enfyswas never tired, she was the most energetic person I knew. "Yes",she said and I looked at her in astonishment. "You, tired? You'renever tired. Also, you slept on the plane." She smirked. "Englandis different, also the jet-lag is real" I was exhausted too. "Maybeyou're right", I shrugged. "I'm Colin, by the way", saidEnfys' father suddenly and I took the hand he offered. "I'mSiria." He looked at me and smirked. "Oh, I know about you" hesaid. I must've looked very surprised, because he started laughing."Oh, don't worry, only good things." He smirked again and Imust have blushed. Enfys winked at me from behind her father and Ismiled.
Wewalked through the small airport out in to the parking lot. The firstthing I noticed was that it was cold. I shivered a little and Enfyslaughed at me. "I told you it was gonna be cold", she said. Herfather turned around without stopping and said. "Oh, it'sactually one of the warmest days in the last few weeks, but don'tworry, the car will be warm anyway. It has been standing in the sunfor the past hour."
Colinwas right. When we finally reached the car, Gwendolyn opened the doorand I could feel the warmth of it. Colin was loading our baggage inthe trunk and we hopped in. Gwendolyn got in the car and startedrubbing her belly. I smiled at the gesture. "How far along are youGwen?" Enfys asked and Gwendolyn turned around to answer. "Thebaby is due in a few days." "What, you don't even look that faralong", I said and blushed a little considering that was reallystraightforward. Colin and Gwendolyn laughed. "Right?", she said."The nurse didn't believe me either when I went to the maternityward in Manchester." It took a while to sink in that Gwendolyn wasgoing to have her baby while we were here. That must have been weirdfor them. But on the other hand, we were there to take care of thechickens and maybe also the household in the first few weeks of thebaby's arrival.
"Doyou have any names picked out?", asked Enfys. "Yes", answeredColin. "But we are not telling you now. Maybe if we can'tdecide." Gwendolyn raised her eyebrows. "Oh, I will be able todecide, don't worry." Enfys laughed at that and I found it quitefunny, too.Myjaw dropped when we turned into the driveway. The house was an oldVictorian farmhouse and reminded me of the one in "Forrest Gump".I looked at Enfys; "It's beautiful", I whispered. Enfysgiggled. "Right?" Colin grinned in the rear mirror. "Theperfect place to grow up for our baby." He parked the car and gotout. I unlocked my seatbelt and quickly got out too. "It smellslike freshly mowed grass and sunshine!", I said, taking a deepbreath. Enfys bumped my shoulder with her fist. "Stop sucking up tomy Dad!" She laughed. I shrugged, "It's the truth." And itwas. The front porch was wooden with a swing hanging from the woodenbeam. I'min love,I thought and took the luggage Colin was offering me. Gwendolyn wasalready walking towards the back of the house. "We are taking theback door. It's closer to your bedroom." I started dragging mythings toward the back door and got a little annoyed because it was agravel walk and my rolling suitcase kept getting stuck in thepathway. Enfys overtook me and jumped happily ahead, her wavy hairbouncing up and down. "Are you excited?", she asked over hershoulder, "because I am!" I smiled at the back of her head. Afterwe finally made it to the door we squeezed through the small backdoor. Gwendolyn pushed everything that could have been in our way tothe side to make it easier for us. I smiled at her while passing herand went straight after Enfys to our room. The stairs were small andsteep and I struggled quite a bit getting my luggage up.
Enfyson the other hand was practically flying up the stairs and burstingthrough the last door on the left. I giggled at her enthusiasm andwent in behind her. The room had been painted in a warm peachycolour. The wooden wardrobe was dark and matched the bed and thewalls perfectly. There were two chairs on one side of the room and infront of the bed was a full-length mirror. The big windows offered anice view over the meadows behind the house.
Istepped next to Enfys who was already starring out the window. "Whodo these fields belong to?", I asked. Enfys looked at me; "To therealfarmerhere", she snickered and pointed to a distant farmhouse. I raisedmy eyebrows and crossed my arms. "Are you still making fun of mefor that?", I asked. "I would never", she replied and kissed mesoftly on the lips. "I have a crush on you!", she giggled. "Isthat so?", I laughed and turned around, gesturing to the room."Uhm, it's amazing?" I proceeded to throw my suitcase on thelarge mattress and started unpacking. "I'm definitely taking theleft side" Enfys shrugged. "Whatever", she mumbled staring outof the window again. "Enfys, what's up?" I asked. She shrugged. But I knew exactly what was up. Up the road, only half a mile fromhere lived a pretty girl, only 6 months older than we were. I steppedback to the window and placed a hand on the small of her back. "It'sokay honey, she can't hurt you no more." "Maybe your father wasa Texan after all", she attempted to joke but I saw how she wasdigging her nails in her forearms. "Honey." I made her turnaround. She looked up to me through her lashes. "It's gonna befine." I kissed her forehead. "I promise."
"Girls, tea!", Colin called from downstairs. "But I don't like tea."Enfys giggled at my facial expression and this time I wasn't evenmad at her for laughing at me. "There is no tea, only dinner." -"Wait, what?" I asked after a short pause but Enfys was alreadywalking out the door. "Food! Tea means food!" I caught up withher on the landing and smacked her butt. "Hey!" She turned aroundand blushed. I shrugged with a smug expression on my face andgestured towards where my nose led me.
"Ohyummy, Daddy!", Enfys squealed in delight when she saw what was onthe menu. "Well, I know my little girl!", he claimed as he filleda bowl with steaming chilli. "Remember when we made our ownchilli, Enfys? Well, triedmakingone, rather." Enfys starred at me wide eyed. "Shhh", she hissedand laid a finger on her lips. "Let's not destroy this perfectmoment." Gwendolyn laughed and rubbed her belly. "The little onelikes it too." With that we all began to eat.
Aftera delicious dinner Colin pushed his plate away and sighed. "Girls",he began, "I have a little welcome gift for you. Since Enfys toldme you liked to draw a lot, Siria, I signed you up for a couple ofdrawing lessons." I smiled and it grew wider by the second. "Areyou serious?" I asked excitedly and Enfys groaned. "Yes", Colinanswered, "You are going to be drawing famous British things. Likelandscapes and the skyline of London. Maybe the Westminster Abbey.""Amazing!", I squealed happily, "Do you know what that meansEnfys?", I asked her. She looked at me, raising her eyebrows. "Yes;absolute torture." She sighed. "Come on", Gwendolyn joined theconversation, "how bad can it be?"
Enfyslooked at her disbelievingly. "How bad can it be?? Have you seenSiria with a paintbrush. I look like a teething toddler next toher!", Enfys proclaimed and I blushed. "Look, you're embarrassingher", Gwendolyn said, pointing at me. Enfys shrugged. "She's justtoo modest."
Colinsent us to bed afterwards and I was really glad he did. I was alsoreally glad they didn't want any help in the kitchen because I feltlike If I had stayed up for just a second longer, I'd have fallenasleep while on my feet.
