Some of the best things come from no school days or fake sick days; two things I was not experiencing. Instead of sprawling across my sheets in a pair of cotton shorts, I was beginning an essay in my least favorite subject. Maybe if I had payed more attention to the lecture rather than focusing on Mrs. Lucas peach fuzz, I would have a clue on where to start.

My eyes flicked to my paper then back to Amy who sat two seats away from me. She was my best friend since grade five, so we go way back. She had bone straight black hair that reached her hips but hardly ever wore it down. She also wore rectangular glasses that she preferred over contacts any day.

once the bell rung, I rushed out of the room. I was keen on catching up with Amy so that we could have a spot at the lunch table. If you didn't get a seat soon enough, you'd have no choice but to be marginalized with the weird kids.

"Wait up!" I called down the emptying hallway to Amy. Amy kept walking as if she couldn't hear anything until I finally tapped her shoulder.

"Deaf much?"

"Slow much?" Amy scolded while swishing her hips in a fierce motion, "I'm not losing my seat because of you."

I Raised my hands in surrender, able to see sternness in Amy's eye. Instead of snapping back, I chose to ignore her attitude.

Once in the cafeteria, I bought a salad with chicken nuggets and water. I sat beside my friend Alex with Amy sitting across from me. Of course there were plenty of people filling up the empty seats around us, but I only really talked with those two.

"I'm done with school, assignments, and my life in general." I stated while dipping a nugget in barbecue sauce. This was the highlight of my day before being sent back to prison.

"We could always leave." Alex suggested.

"Where to?" I questioned with raised brows. He shrugged and gave me his typical smirk.

"I don't know, the mall maybe." He looked as if he were really trying to make a convincing suggestion. Too bad it was a terrible idea considering police reported ditching teens all the time.

"And get caught? Come on, Alex, I thought you were smarter than that."

"We can always chill at my place." He winked while wrapping his arm over my shoulder nonchalantly. I picked it up with the tips of my fingers and removed his arm from my body.

"Alex, you are an unwanted specimen that should just stop trying," Amy complained, "she does not like you."

Alex just shrugged off her comment with a smile. The look on his face told me that it didn't affect him, but nothing ever hurt him. He could go about his business with loads of sarcasm and humor.

"You know, I'd be salty too if I third wheeled as much as you do." I held back a chuckle and looked down at the table. Much like chicken nuggets, their arguments were also the highlight of my day.

"That's funny considering she's my friend!"

"Not as funny as your iron board built ass."

I quickly reached across the table to stop Amy from throwing her carton of milk at him. Their feud escalated a lot quicker than usual. It probably had to do with the fact that Amy was already ticked off before we even entered the cafeteria.

"Calm down." I said while looking her in her eyes. She was clenching her jaw before she dropped the milk onto her tray.

"Awe, is wittle Amy upset?"I smacked Alex roughly on the shoulder and told him to cut it out.

"You two love each other but just don't want to admit it."

I scolded the two while sitting back down. Amy rolled her eyes and Alex snickered. He always found these types of situations humorous.

Lunch was halfway over before a girl carrying a clipboard came to our table. She stopped at a few other people before placing the clipboard in front of me.

"I'm Halle Braxton, head of student council, and I was wondering if you'd like to sign up for Saturday the night sports competition." Amy shook her head no, clearly uninterested. Alex, on the other hand, grabbed a pencil a scribbled his name down on the sheet. The Halle girl thanked him before looking at me.

"What is it exactly?" I asked, needing more information before I agree to anything.

"Well," Halle begun with an inviting smile, "It's where students go through a series of games like dodgeball and tug of war to win a prize to Kings Island. Each group is assigned a staff member as their leader."

I squinted my eyes and looked at the sheet then back to her.

"What's the catch?"

"A five dollar fee. The money goes to a school program or sport of the winners choice." I nodded my head before looking at Amy.

"I'll do it if you do it."

"Do I get to throw a curveball at Alex's face?" I shrugged my shoulders.

"Depends. If you're against him, why not?" Amy smiled while writing her name beneath Alex's.

"I'll take that chance."
