Telling My Parents

I had to wait many years
to build up the courage
to sit down my parents one day
and to tell them: Mom, Dad
I am gay.

I had to know that it was right
That I was ready
and that they were ready
to hear it.

As I sat them down
I saw them eye each other
confused at what I was doing
It's okay, I told them. I need to tell you something.

I saw my Mom look at my Dad
and it was as if she knew.

I felt the words come out of my mouth
slowly, with such difficulty
but once they were out I felt
like I was falling, down, down

Mom and Dad: I'm gay.

My Mom smiles. So does my Dad.
You are always our son, they say.
One of them stands up
and gives me a hug.

We love you -- and we always will.
