I had to wait many years
to build up the courage
to sit down my parents one day
and to tell them: Mom, Dad
I am gay.I had to know that it was right
That I was ready
and that they were ready
to hear it.As I sat them down
I saw them eye each other
confused at what I was doing
It's okay, I told them. I need to tell you something.I saw my Mom look at my Dad
and it was as if she knew.I felt the words come out of my mouth
slowly, with such difficulty
but once they were out I felt
like I was falling, down, downMom and Dad: I'm gay.
My Mom smiles. So does my Dad.
You are always our son, they say.
One of them stands up
and gives me a hug.We love you -- and we always will.
