Jonathan felt scared. It was finally over. The war was lost.
Lost by them.
Lost by him.
They were coming. The group was stuck in the crumbled ruins of their old haven. Everybody else was dead. He was their leader. He should know what to do.He heard Charlie shout, "Jonathan! What should we do! They are coming from all over!"
"Hey Johnny! Hurry up and answer already!"
Minnie screamed at him, eyes blazing. She was still too oblivious to the fact that there was nothing more to do.He looked around. And locked eyes with Harold.
Their eyes met, and whatever hope he had left was extinguished.Harold's eyes had one clear message: it's hopeless. They were going to die.
The team watched as the monsters made their way towards them, destroying everything in their path.
As they closed in, he heard Marie scream.
They were heading up the valley.
Minnie yelled at him in frustration, "Jonathan! Answer! What should we do!"
Jonathan's eyes met her's.
"Minnie, there's nothing we can do. There's no way out of this. I'm sorry."
"What do you mean no-" Minnie stopped short.
"Harold is this true?" She pleaded at the boy with her eyes.
Harold couldn't make himself say anything, but his eyes told the truth.
Marie began to sob.
Charlie had a face of hopelessness like Harold's.
Minnie just stood there, shocked.
Then she turned and screamed at Jonathan, "this can't be! There's always a way! Jonathan you are our leader! You are responsible for us!"
They were only about a kilometre away now.
Then, suddenly, his mind cleared.
Jonathan knew what to do.
He looked at his team mates. They all deserved to live. They can't die. They mustn't die.
He faced all of them and said, " you guys don't deserve to die. But I do. I led you all into this. I can save you. I can save the last of the special. They have eliminated all of the abilited. We are the only ones left."
"Jonathan? What are you thinking?" Minnie asked.
Marie paused between her sobs.
They all looked at him.
"I know what I can do. I couldn't save all the others, but I can save you guys. Help to build up a new school for me, a school where all can live in peace. Promise me that, okay?"
"What are you trying to do?" Marie said timidly, pausing between her sobs.
Jonathan didn't answer.
He didn't want to.
He looked at Harold. His face was grim.
"Are you sure?" Harold asked.Jonathan nodded.
"What's happening?" Charlie looked at the two of them.
"I wish there was another way, but it's all I got," Jonathan smiled at all of them.
"Bye... fulfil that promise for me ok?"
Then, tears streaming from his eyes, Jonathan ran towards the monsters.
They were only a few metres away.
He heard Minnie scream his name and shout for him to come back, hurling all kinds of insults.
He stopped in front of the monsters.
They stopped too.
Jonathan stretched his hands out and concentrated the hardest he ever could.
Then he screamed.
The monsters were all blasted back.
A golden glow flashed behind him.
Harold had deployed the shield.
But he could still hear their screams.
"Jonathan how dare you! Come back here!" Minnie raged.
Marie was crying for him and sobbing.
He held his position, till all was silent. Then he turned around.
The team looked ragged despite the protection.
They all had tears streaks on their faces.
Minnie was kneeling on the ground, still screaming insults at him.
Marie was hugging Harold, her face buried in his shirt.
Harold looked solemn.
Charlie had his hands over his face. Then, he saw them look up, shocked, a small glimmer of hope in their eyes. All except for Harold. Harold mouthed the words, I promise, and blinked back tears.
Jonathan nodded.
Then he felt the pain.
It racked through his body like a bolt of lightning, making him fall to his knees.
Charlie shouted his name.
Then, he felt nothing. His body turned into a million little pieces. He looked so fragile, as if his body was just made of dust, easily lost to the winds. He looked up at his teammates, his best friends, and smiled the last smile he would ever smile in a long time to come.
Then, the million little pieces scattered to the winds.
He was gone.
This time, they all screamed for him. In the silence of a destroyed world.
In the silence of their destroyed home. A home of the special.
The home of the abilited.
