The day had come, all my life I had spent studying hoping that I may live, all this time I'd been worried sick I wouldn't be selected and would die a slow painful death.
Our government was ruthless, killing people left and right without qualm, and each year over a thousand fourteen year-olds are taken from there families if they aren't deemed 'good enough' and never seen again.
Murdered.
And today was the day my life might end.
My mother smoothed my unruly black hair and kissed my forehead.
"You look beautiful."
Chris, my best friend, erupted through the door and gave me a huge hug.
"We got this Ar, don't worry."
He stared into my eyes, we had had huge crushes on each other since birth, but had never admitted to it.
"Chris stop smothering my daughter and eat some pancakes." My mother said jokingly.
"Of course Mrs. Marot."
I rolled my eyes. He was so cute. Tall and muscular, sharp green eyes and brown hair that made girls swoon. He could easily be sixteen.
"Aria dear come join us."
"Yes mom"
I wasn't hungry, in fact I could throw up. Butterflies was an understatement.
I shoveled down a few bites, Chris was talkative but I couldn't hear what he was saying only a slight hum, I was to far into my world.
'You're gonna fail' Cleo, shit. Cleo was the sassy teen girl that spoke to me in my head, I had more but Cleo was the downer
"Shut up Cleo." I muttered under my breath.
"What was that?" My mother inquired.
"Nothing, nothing."
'Smooth Aria, real smooth.'
'Shut up Cleo' I said it this time in my head so no one could here except for her.
"Aria are you ok?" Chris held my hand under the table.
"Ya" I smiled, "Just a bit nervous."
"No need" My mother paused. " You two have worked so hard, there is no way you will be taken."
Taken was the polite word adults used for when the government killed you.
"Ready?" She asked
We went through the door and drove towards the town hall, really towards our death
