"Erin, I want to agree with you. I really do." Jay took Erin's hand. "But . . . I haven't even met Isabella. I think Ethan's the one for us."

Erin shook her head in frustration, adjusting her position on the brown sofa, with her knees held up to her chest.

Jay didn't know what to do. This was not as easy as he had hoped it would be. Erin sincerely wanted this random girl that Jay had never even seen before. He had connected with Ethan so much over fifteen minutes of play-time. He always wanted a son, and the idea of being able to call Ethan his own was a dream. He wanted Erin happy, but he really, really wanted Ethan.

"What if we adopt both?"

Jay raised his eyebrows. "No. I mean, we can't . . . we've never been parents before. This will be our first time. First time parents don't suddenly have two kids at the same time, unless they have twins. And that's unimaginably difficult. We need to start off easy."

"Look. I want Ethan, okay? But I want Isabella more. Can we please try? I want to fix their lives. It can't hurt to try. We know if we need help we've always got Laura, Kim, and Hank."

Jay chewed his lip. There is no way I'm going through with this. I can't suddenly have two kids.

"Jay, please." Erin gave him the most pleading, desperate face he'd ever received from her.

He sighed. "What do I get in return?"

She smirked, before leaning forward and kissing him, her hand on his clavicle. He wrapped his arms around her waist and gently pushed her back onto her back, not parting his lips from hers once.

...

"Perfect." Marie, the twenty year old blonde woman at H.A.C. took the papers from Jay's hand.

Jay's heart was beating fast. He was admittedly a little bit scared, but also extremely excited. He was about to bring home his daughter and son.

"Here they are," Marie removed the baby gate and the first toddler to race up to them was Ethan. He raced first into Jay's arms, because he recognized him immediately.

"Hey, little man!" Jay lifted him up playfully. "You wanna come home with us?"

"Today?" Ethan asked in astonishment.

"Heck yeah," he said, just excited as Ethan was. "Right now!"

Ethan celebrated by hopping out of Jay's arms and doing ludicrous dance choreography.

An extremely small, two year old girl with blunt bangs and long, wavy, dark cocoa hair. She was wearing the same grey dress as she wore the last time Erin visited her. She dragged a miniature suitcase and walked shyly towards Erin.

"Hi, Isabella," Erin smiled and crouched down unexpectedly as the small girl reached out her arms for a hug.

"I like when my friends and--and people when they . . . I like when they call me Izzy." she stumbled over her words in an adorable little child way.

"Hi, Izzy," Jay said, smiling to the shy, young girl who unexpectedly smiled back at him. "You ready to go?"

She nodded, and Erin took her hand, Ethan giving Jay his suitcase and taking his hand as they headed out to their black SUV.

"We've got something for you both." As Jay and Erin both helped the children into their new car seats, Erin handed Jay a plastic bag. He finished buckling Ethan and pulled out a few outfits from the bag.

"Can I have the green shirt on?" Ethan asked desperately.

"You guys can try them all on as soon as we get home," Erin smiled when she was Izzy grinning wildly at the pink summer dress in Jay's hand.

"Will Izzy and me get to stay at that home?" Ethan asked.

Jay climbed into the driver's seat. "Yeah, bud, it's your home, too, now."

Erin noticed Ethan talk about Izzy without hesitation. "So have you and Izzy been friends for a while?"

Izzy nodded. "He's a friend." She began counting her fingers. "There's this many of the ones that are mine in there." She seemed confused as she folded a few more of her fingers. "No, this many. Well, I can't really count."

Jay laughed. "That's okay, sweetheart. You'll get to go to school with Ethan and learn how to. How does that sound?"

The two toddlers began talking immediately about what they were going to do with their new clothes. They were overjoyed about earning a few pieces of clothing.

Erin shut the door and got into the passenger's seat. She smiled when she saw Jay wink at her, glad to be driving again.

They pulled onto the road and headed home.

...

"You look so beautiful, Izzy," Jay smiled at the adorable little girl as Erin struggled to french braid her hair. She squirmed and tried to playfully kick Ethan as he ran by teasingly.

Jay grabbed Ethan's arms and he screamed as he was lifted into the air. Jay scooped him up and tipped him upside-down. "Get your suit on, Captain Ethan. You're going to be late for your flight!"

Ethan took off his dirty clothes and put on his new airplane pajamas. He ran around in circles with his arms spread wide, pretending to be an airplane.

"Watch out for that plane," Erin said, smiling, still focused on Izzy's hair. Once she washed her hair, it went from horse hair to silk. It made her sad how badly the orphanages took care of the kids. Her kids. She smiled at that idea.

"Captain! Your flight is about to take off!" Jay pointed to the kids' bedroom, and Ethan ran into it. He hopped onto his airplane-quilt bed and slipped under the covers. "Wait, Jay," before Jay shut off the lights Ethan climbed back out of bed. "Leave them on."

"Aw, little man," Jay crouched down. "I can't we gotta go to bed. It's already eleven."

He made a puppy face. "Will you sleep with me tonight?"

Jay smiled, but shook his head. "Izzy will be here in a minute."

He nodded and raced back to his bed, his arms spread out again, his mouth making motor noises. He climbed under the covers, and once Jay patted him on the stomach, tickled him, and tucked him in, he settled down.

"Wait, Jay," Ethan said again, right before Jay shut the lights off. "Can you be my dad and my friend? Two at the same time?"

Jay smiled. "Of course, bud. Always. Now get some sleep." He shut off the lights as Erin walked in holding Izzy, who was resting her head on Erin's shoulder. She slipped her into her pink bed and adjusted her soft, pink night gown before tucking her in and kissing her forehead. She had grown attached to the little girl so fast. She said goodnight to Ethan and they snuck out of the room.

Jay pulled the door shut and Erin wrapped her arms around Jay. They laughed, hushed, in front of the bedroom, occasionally kissing quietly.

"Ethan wants me to be his dad and his friend," Jay whispered.

"Izzy called me mommy," Erin laughed as quietly as she could. "It's only been six hours."

"They've never had a family before," Jay noted. "They seem to love having one."

Erin nodded. "They're amazing, but also hyper. I need some sleep."

Jay smirked and followed Erin to bed.
