Good Morning

I knew who was at the door and my clothes were still wet. "Kate, it's Axle. Are you decent?" Axle's voice was light and mousy. He was another person who stayed in the Motel. "No, I'm not! Just hold a second!" I shouted so he could hear me clearly. He slumped on the door making a loud thump.

I tossed on the driest piece of clothing. A oversized cotton gray t-shirt and a over used pair of underwear. They were still damp but still wearable. I walked to the door, each step creaked. The door knob was a faded copper color. I turned it in one fast motion and swung open the door. Axle straightened from his slouching position. "What can I help ya with?" I crossed my arms as I asked. He had dark blond shaggy hair that spited in every direction. Scars and large chunks of skin covered its surface. "Sinder wanted me to tell everyone breakfast is ready." Axle looked behind me to the room behind me. "Do you want to come with me or are you busy?" He gestured to the table with a nod. I turned to my partly dried clothing. " Just give me a second. I'll go with you." I answered. I shut the door and spun on the ball of my foot. My pants were still damp but I shoved my legs though anyway.

I opened the door to Axle's slumped posture. His face was glazed over, completely focused on a crack in the floor.  I kicked the door jam he was leaning on and snapped him out of the trance. I crossed my arms and smirked. "Who's here today?" I asked. His hair moved out of his eyes as he lifted his head.  "Well, 102..." He pointed to the metal plate on the top of the door. "And 116, 134, 136 and 140." He pointed to himself for the last door number and smiled.

I closed my door. I didn't feel the need to lock the door. I had nothing really valuable to steal. Axle had recently taken a shower, I noticed. He usually smelled like a wet dog on a hot day in Miami. "What did Sinder make today?" I trailed off as we walked to the first door. "Do you really want to know?" He raised an eyebrow. He was right, it is always best not to know what Sinder made for our meals. I didn't want to lose my apatite. "You're right never mind." I scrunched my face as if I smelled something terrible.

Axle knocked on Luna's door, 116. "Luna, you awake?" A female grown came from inside. "Go away! I want to sleep more."  Her voice was muffled by a pillow. Luna was not a morning person and was a force to be reckoned with.

Tiny scratches came from inside the room. We were lucky, Mr. Snickers, the resident mutant cat, also wanted her to wake up. The cat yowled at the door. "No, kitty." A pillow was tossed in the direction of the door. Axle smiled and laughed a bit. She rolled out of bed with a hit to the floor with a large thump. The floor vibrated from Luna's collision. Mr. Snickers yowled. She stood up and walked swiftly to the door. With a flick of her wrist, the door opened.

Luna's eyes narrowed in Axle's direction. "It's the break of dawn. Why are you waking me up this early?" As she spoke a beam of light licked her face. "Breakfast is ready." Axle pointed his thumb in the direction of the kitchen. "okay, I'll be there in a bit." Her hair resembled a rat's nest, slick spikes jutted in different directions.

Luna's eyes glowed a deep ocean blue. I imagined gouging out her eyes and placing it on a ring. It would still be mistaken as sapphire. Her body was slender, but strong, an athletic body. I felt jealousy, even though she was my best female friend here. I stuffed the feeling deep down into my stomach.

The mutant cat rubbed it's prickly body against my bare leg. His fur was  finally growing back.  That is good. i thought. A flash of last night's dream made me shutter. Luna picked up Mr. Snickers and placed him on her left shoulder. I could hear his gurgling purrs as she turned to close the door.

Axle began walking to the next door. "134, 134, 134." He chanted the number over and over.  Danny Black came to this land the same way as I did, but we thought of it differently. He felt as if we were banished, as for myself felt it was my duty as a protector  of the wall. That was the only thought that kept me sane. I can still see why he feels that way though. In a way we were banished.
