Chapter 1.
"Mom can you please make Nate stop pinching me! It's so annoying!" I shouted shoving him away with my elbow.
"Emersyn, leave your brother alone he's only 12. You were like that too 4 years ago when you were that age." Her eyes diverted back and fourth from my brother to me and back at the road. I huffed and stared out the car window. Why did I have to come on this little road trip anyways, thank god we're finally going home. I just want to get there and sleep.
Right now we're on the highway driving back from a small town outside of Manhattan, returning to the city. Let's face it, summer is almost over and school will be starting up again in 3 days.
I gave a small sigh, still staring at the cars driving by. Nothing but grey outside. Grey cloudy sky, grey cement, grey cars. "Oh what is it now Em?" My mother, Carol Mace, cooed from the drivers seat. "Didn't you have fun today? I'm trying my best you know, without your father and all." That was another thing... It was just the three of us. Mom, Nate and I. My dad left last year and somedays it's still hard getting all the money to pay the bills. Mom likes taking us for drives so it could give us all time to think and do something together.
I myself, am not like most teenage girls with phones and purses and lots of fancy clothes. I've only got two great friends, David and Connie, but Connie lives farther away so I can't see her that often. Also, I don't have a cell phone to text them with either. Somedays it's just me at school. It's not like I mind it, I like being alone. "Thanks mom, I did have fun." I spoke in a softer tone knowing how much she's done for us.
At that, I leaned forward in the back seat and hugged her tightly. She laughed and awkwardly hugged me back. In that moment I looked out the front windshield and shock hit me.
"Mom! Look out!" A dark shadow ran in front of the car. Mom slammed the brakes, I flew back into the seat. That's when lights flashed and a piercing honk rang in my ears. The next thing I knew, glass was smashing and we were hurtling in every direction.
