Chapter Two

Ashley has attached herself to the football star, Dante Wyatt, and she smirks at me. Out of the corner of my eye I see Jordan staring at me from across the cafeteria as if he wants to come over and say something, but he just sits down and stares at the table.

Asshole.

"Excuse me," Isaac says, stepping forward and wrapping his arm around my waist. "But I believe you were the one who ran into her. So why don't you watch where you're going?"

"Why you little-"

"Ashley, stop it, you're causing a scene over nothing," Dante grabs her by her waist and begins to pull her away.

"I am not!" She spits. "This little bitch clearly-"

"Ashley!" He whisper yells. "You're causing a scene!"

"I am not! Why are you taking her side?" She turns to him and he scratches the back of his neck awkwardly.

"Babe, just calm down and-"

"Do not tell me to calm down!"

"Excuse me," Isaac buts in.

"What!?" Ashley snaps, spinning around to face us. Her blonde hair is pulled back in a tight, curly ponytail and her blue eyes look murderous.

"Just because you're PMSing doesn't mean you have to take it out on us,"

"I can't believe you-"

"Ashley, he's right," Dante says.

"What!?" She screeches.

The three of us look at her, then at Dante, then back at her. He nods and picks her up, swinging her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

"Sorry 'bout this," He says before walking away with a screaming Ashley pounding away on his back.

"Well, that was fun," Isaac says as he grabs a tray from the stack at the end of the buffet-type tables. "Nothing like a little drama to start off senior year."

"You got that right," Mackenzie agrees as she too grabs a trey. They start to load their plates with food but I don't and just walk beside them awkwardly.

"You're not getting anything?" Isaac asks. "You usually eat everything in sight!"

I giggle and grab a coke from the cooler and hand the lunch lady 75 cents.

"I lost my appetite," I say.

"Oh I know," He laughs. "Her face is just...ew..." He scrunches up his face in disgust and Mackenzie playfully punches him in the arm to get him moving.

Both of them pay for their lunches and we make our way to our usual table, right by the door so we can leave right away without getting trampled by the stampede of students when lunch is over.

"Why aren't you eating?" Mackenzie asks.

"I don't know," I shrug. "I'm just not that hungry."

Isaac and Mackenzie spend the rest of lunch talking excitedly about their plans for this weekend which, sadly, is four long days away. I try and keep my eyes from roaming to Jordan, but they repeatedly manage to flit in his direction. Most of the time his eyes are glued to the table but a few times I catch him looking my way. Each time he looks away just like he did when we were at camp.

I sigh sadly.

"What's wrong?" Isaac asks.

"Just tired, that's all," I say.
