The Clearwater siblings were patrolling around in the woods, in their phased forms. Now that there were imprintees on both sides of the treaty line, the ancient agreement had been overwritten. Both groups had to work together now.
Seth. Leah.
The two wolves turned their heads towards the russet-furred figure, which clomped up next to them.
Hey Jake! Seth's familiar cheery voice ringed in Jacob's head. Leah's wolf just nodded in acknowledgement, she wasn't usually one for words. At least, after Sam's rejection.
Seen any other leeches out there? Jacob jerked his head towards the woods.
Nope. Leah huffed out.
You guys take a break, Sam's pack is taking over.
Just then, they heard singing coming from a distance. And a whole lot of bird calls, unnaturally so.
Who's that? Seth turned to Jacob to ask for permission to investigate. But Jacob already knew that voice, and scent. It was just Megan, she always wandered into the woods.
It's cool. That's just one of the leeches' daughter. She's like Renesmee though.
"Jakey? Is that you?" The light voice called out from afar. "Papa's not a leech!"
How the hell is she able to hear you?
Shit, guys. Let's go. She's not supposed to see you guys like that, and I'll explain later.
As the wolves turned to leave, they heard a scream.
All three wolves immediately rushed in the direction of Megan's voice, by instinct. And as they neared the clearing where they could see a girl sitting on the floor, bare-foot. They also saw an unfamiliar wolf snarling at her.
Before they were about to intervene, they heard the command which made them freeze at the authority. "Go. Away." But the wolf continued snarling.
Darker so, "I said. Stay. Away!" And swarms of birds suddenly circled above them, high in the treetops. They were all calling so furiously. And the forest around all of them turned dark as their wings blocked out the light. The three wolves could only stop to watch in awe, as they all swarmed around the new wolf; it started to back away in pain and fear, whimpering until it laid on the ground, submissive.
Then, all at once the birds flew away. But there was an unnatural silence, as if the birds were afraid to even let out a single note or tune.
Jacob quickly went to phase behind a tree, slipping on the clothes which were tied to his ankle. Then, he slowly stepped to the shaking girl on the floor.
"Megan?" She didn't answer, whimpering and sniffing.
"Megan, its Jake." The two Clearwater had slunk off to a nearby bush.
Jacob's name seemed to pull her out of her trance as she jerked her head to look up at him, he was kneeling down in front of her.
"Jakey!" She immediately jumped into his warms arms, sobbing into his shirt.
"Shh...Its alright now, you're safe."
"He was so angry! I told him to calm down, but he wouldn't listen to me!" She mumbled into his shirt. Then, she leaned out of the embrace. "Is he hurt?"
Jacob now turned to look back at the newly-phased wolf behind him and scanned him. "Nope," he said, popping the 'p' sound at the end, "he's gonna be fine."
"Jakey?"
"Hmm?"
"Who's Seth and Leah? Are they like you?" That question took him aback.
"Who?" He tried to play dumb, but he can't help but take a glance at the bush behind. Following his gaze, the quick-minded Megan put two and two together. With her quick reflexes and inhuman speed, she slipped out of Jacob's arms and ran into the bushes—
And she was saddling down comfortably on Seth's cream-furred back, giggling. But Seth was not so pleased with the unfamiliar weight. He was tensed, fur standing on end. He wanted to shake her off, but he also didn't want to hurt her.
Getoffgetoffgetoff!
Jacob was laughing at Seth. Hell, even Leah's wolf was grinning a wolf-grin. The giggling on top of him slowly ceased, and the weight suddenly disappeared.
A light 'thump' sounded beside him, "Sorry. I'll stop now, Seth." He tilted his head to the side, and his eyes followed from the feet, to the girl's face, and eventually to her eyes—
The world stopped for a moment.
And all he could see were flashes of his future with her.
And all he could think was her, her, her.
