Klaus and Caroline made their way into her room. She talked as she went to sit on the bed. Not that he heard any of it. He was too busy taking it in. You can tell a lot about a person by their room. From the yellow walls to the piles of books strewn about; He felt like the whole room screamed her personality. It was nice. Klaus sat on the bed, trying to keep a reasonable distance between him and Caroline, and nodded, not sure what she had even said.
There were books and photos sprawled out all over the place, which Klaus took an interest to. He picked up a photo of Caroline and two other girls. Seeing it, a slight smile dashed across Caroline’s face.
“I miss them,” she said in a quiet voice. “The way we were I mean.” Klaus looked at her questioningly. It was still weird to Caroline to think that he really knew nothing. “Right. That’s me, of course, and to my right is Bonnie, a witch; to the left is Elena, vampire. It all started with Elena really, back in sophomore year.” Caroline was about to start with her story; tell him everything, from the beginning; but she realized how much it all was. And Klaus didn’t need to hear everything now. “I’ll tell you what. I think it’s best if you hear a little at a time.” Klaus was relieved.
“Yes, I think so. I need to take it all in, ease back into my old life.” Caroline smiled in agreement, but she had made a promise to herself, the moment she first realized he had a clean slate, that she would never let Klaus go back to his old life. It was for the best.
“So,” she started, “what will it be? What do you want to know tonight?” Klaus thought for a moment, it was obvious to him.
“My family; where I come from.” He looked at her expectant, almost anxiously.
Caroline was troubled. Not only was she no expert on the Mikaelsons, but she wasn’t sure how to be honest about his family without giving too much detail on his gruesome history.
“Well, I don’t think I’m the right person to tell you about your past. I think we need to take a trip to the Salvatore mansion for that,” she told him. He didn’t have a clue. Caroline rolled her eyes, “We’ll get to them later. What I can tell you at least a little bit about is what we are, vampires. More importantly, I can tell you about what you are, an original vampire…hybrid.” This was confusing. “We’ll get to that.”
“Let’s start with the basics. Vampirism. You’ve got the obvious stuff: we drink blood, can’t go into the sun-”
“But I can walk just fi-”
“I’ll get to it. Be patient and let me talk.” Klaus sat back, ready to talk it all in. She started again. “anyways; blood, sun, wooden stakes and all that; that’s basic knowledge. But there’s a lot more to us than that. Like our speed and strength, which I’m sure you’ve figured out. My personal favorite is compulsion.” Caroline looked excited, full of light. She had a very bubbly spirit, which, admittedly, Klaus found himself drawn to. “You wait here; I’ll show you what I’m talking about.” She was out of the room in less than a second.
While she was gone, Klaus studied her room again; looking at the photos on the wall, her CD collection, everything. He picked up the nearest book he could find; or at least he thought it was a book. It was actually a journal; but he didn’t want to intrude on Caroline’s privacy. As he put it down, something fell out. He picked it up to look at it. It was a drawing, a beautiful one. It was Caroline, standing next to a horse. She was wearing a beautiful dress. At the bottom of the drawing was a name. His name. He had drawn this; for Caroline. It was odd, though. Although he couldn’t remember anything about the drawing, it was like he could feel it. It struck a chord in him. It was a little unsettling.
Just then he heard Caroline coming back. He stuck the paper in the journal and set it back where he found it.
Caroline stopped in the doorway and motioned to Klaus.
“My mom is being rude and won’t participate. So, we’ll have to take this elsewhere.” Klaus followed Caroline out of the room and through the house. “Of course, this is actually perfect; I can also give you a lesson on how to feed properly.”
Klaus walked with Caroline through the woods.
“Where are we going?”
“it’s just a little further. There’s a running path up here; the neighbor usually goes jogging around this time. Let’s see if we can find him.” Caroline sped off through the woods. Klaus ran after her.
They stopped after a bit, when they heard someone coming. Caroline talked quick.
“Okay, I’m going to feed from him, then compel him to forget. This way you don’t have to kill anyone. Understand?” Klaus nodded in agreement.
When the jogger got close enough, Caroline stepped out into the path. The man stopped.
“Hi, Caroline. I haven’t seen you in a while. How’s your mother?” He smiled at her, not acknowledging Klaus. Caroline gave a sweet smile back.
“she’s fine, Caroline answered. Then, she lunged forward and started feeding from the man’s neck. When he began to scream she stopped, looked him deep in the eye, and told him to be quiet, and to stay still. He did. Caroline loved the power.
Klaus was a little taken back. After seeing sweet, gentile Caroline all day, this was...interesting. It was sexy, really. She turned to him, wiping the blood from her mouth.
“Now your turn. Just feed; when you’re through, look him in the eyes and tell him to forget he ever saw us.”
Klaus stepped towards the man, who didn’t move, and didn’t speak a word. He turned around to look at Caroline.
“How did you do that?” He asked; amazed. Caroline was tickled. She was enjoying this more that she should.
“Compulsion. Feed from him first, not too much; then all you have to do is look in the eye and tell him to forget.” Klaus turned back. He could smell the blood dripping down the man’s neck. His mouth started to water. He approached the man, glanced at Caroline once more, then he drank.
After he finished, he did as Caroline said.
“Forget you ever saw us here,” he told the man. Then looked to Caroline; she smiled.
“Good, you did perfect.” She came to stand next to Klaus. She looked at the man again and said, “Now, go home, clean that up. Don’t let anyone see.” The man jogged away like nothing ever happened. Klaus was impressed.
“So I can make anyone do anything I want?” Klaus asked, intrigued.
“Most people, yes; unless they are wearing, or consuming, vervain.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s a plant. You can’t compel people who are wearing it. Anyone in Mystic Falls who knows about vampires wears it.”
“Oh, Okay.” Caroline motioned for him to follow her and she disappeared; running towards the house. Klaus couldn’t wrap his head around her. He ran after her.
