Last night, Nick walked home with me. He did not say anything exceptionally rude or annoying. We just talked like normal people. It was weird yet refreshing. When I thought he had changed, the next morning came and his tormenting was back on. I felt foolish for believing his nice act. But I managed to survive yet another week of school and work.
I waited for my father on the edge of the curb of the theatres waiting for him to pick me up after my shift. At least it had stopped raining. It had been raining all week and all day. I checked my phone for the time calculating how much longer he would need.
"Hey candy girl!" Nick yelled from Trey's car. They were driving my way. Nick looked to his left at his friend. "Do it."
Before I knew it, they were skidding near the curb, driving past the puddle from the week of rain purposely, drenching me wet from head to toe.
I let out a squeal as the cold dirty water hit me. I wiped the water off my face before yelling after him. "Nick! I am going to kill you, you asshole!"
I could hear the boy's laughter, as well as Amelia who was in the backseat with them waving at me as if to rub it in. Not to mention all the other people in the theatres who witnessed the whole thing in amusement. Great, even outside of school I was still the laughing stock thanks to Nick.
My father finally pulled by in his truck after Nick and his friends were gone. Speaking of bad timing. He couldn't have gotten here sooner?
"Whoa, what happened to you?" he asked, eyeing up and down.
"What do you think?" I spat. I wanted Nick's head on a platter. That boy was the devil.
"I refuse to believe Nicholas could do this, he is such a sweet kid," my father said with a smile. Nick was the son my dad never had. He would help him fix his truck, sometimes my dad would go over to watch the game with him and his dad, Nick would help my dad with bringing in the groceries, and occasionally they would toss a football around. No one would ever believe Nick was the devil. He was the perfect boy wonder of the town. Everyone loved him, well everyone except me.
I finally got home and dressed into something warm hoping I would not get a cold. I looked at Nick's sweater sitting on the chair near my bed. I haven't gotten around to returning it. Before I could get into bed, I peered through my window and to Nick's house. His window and my window were facing each other. It was the worst thing that could have happened to me, but it was either this room or the very small room we had made into the guest room.
His lights were off. He probably wasn't home yet. I wondered if Trey was good with third wheeling Amelia and Nick. Or maybe it was the other way around, Amelia was third wheeling with Trey and Nick. I would never get those three. I went to bed and did not hear the sound of Trey's car nearing our house. I guess they were really staying up late. His choice. If I was lucky then the three wouldn't show up to school tomorrow.
I woke up the next day and got ready to school. I went outside and Nick was not on his front porch ready to ruin my morning. Weird. I continued walking to school waiting for Trey to show up and for the teasing to start, but he didn't. Extra weird. Maybe Nick stayed the night at either Trey or Amelia's house... or a motel.
I finally got to school and saw Trey and Amelia standing with their group of friends. Nick was not with them. As glad as I was that he wasn't there, something didn't feel right. I went to classes and there was still no sign of Nick. Was he sick? The final school bell rang before I went to my locker to get my things. I saw two officers talking to a few boys from the football field. One of the boys pointed his finger towards me making the officers turn my way. What was going on?
