“So where were we last night?”

I had had a good night’s sleep last night. Nate had been there by my side, letting me dole out warmth from him and being the best boyfriend a girl could ever have. I had totally forgotten what it was like to sleep like a normal person during normal slumber timings. The next day when I woke up with Nate sleeping peacefully beside me, I felt as calm as I could remember being a couple years back. My insides were functioning fantastically and for the first time in forever, I didn’t need coffee to stay awake.

When I eyed Nate’s emotionless face, I wondered that if Nate had ever exuded more emotion than before. He looked as harmonious as gentle breeze blowing on a warm, summer day. His face was as debonair as art, showing me the innocence he possessed and the confidence that he wanted me to have. Right in that moment, he looked perfect.

It was funny how I didn’t have any nightmares the night he had decided to sleep next to me. I couldn’t remember one clear time when I had been as good to him as he had been to me. His kindness made me feel thoroughly flawed. His presence though made me feel safe; nothing could touch me with him by my side.

Don’t think too much, my subconscious prodded. You lost Jack because of the thinking.

Currently, the two of us were residing my bed. Nate had woken up half an hour later to me. He had smiled lazily at me and kissed me on the cheek, greeting me good morning. He had asked me if I had slept well and I had agreed and thanked him for accompanying me to bed.

I pretended to be clueless by pursing my lips and scrunching my face in a thoughtful expression. “Where were we?”

He gave me a droll stare. “Don’t play dumb with me, Jennifer. You know that I…”

I threw my hands up in surrender. “Okay! You win. Shoot!”

Nate simpered at me and dragged me forward towards him. “I…”

“Jenns!” Daddy’s voice cut my boyfriend off of his impending lecture.

My eyes widened as soon as I realized that daddy had no clue about Nate’s sleepover in the house, in my room. My eyes fixed on the door over which daddy was knocking incessantly to grab my attention; I started slapping Nate on his chest frantically. A second later, Nate grasped my hand and kissed the knuckles sweetly. My heart started beating wildly in my chest and it surely wasn’t because of dad’s sudden roll call.

“Umm…Coming!” I replied back and then, looked at Nate who was eying me amusedly. “You have to go.” I whispered in a low voice. I didn’t hear any knocking from the other side but figured that daddy was waiting for me to open the door for him.

“Okay! But I’ll be back.” He kissed me on the cheek and hopped off of the bed. He opened the window and as it creaked in the process, I gasped in horror. I animatedly but silently asked him to make no sound and he nodded his head obediently.

“Jenns…!”

“Coming, daddy!” I yelled out frantically and simultaneously, shooed Nate away from my bedroom. Gradually, he climbed out and down the tree which was located outside the window of my room. I sighed momentarily in relief and jumped off of the furniture to open the door.

When the door opened, daddy’s face flashed before my eyes and he looked worried. “Hey!”

He checked me all over but maintained his decent distance. “Are you okay?”

I bobbed my head up and down. “Yeah! Why do you ask?”

“You were screaming last night yet again.”
