Failing

Dan's POV:

I was practically dozing off in my 2nd period history class. Mr. Lester was always way to thorough when teaching us and it was just so god damn boring. I didn't ever pay attention anyway, participation was never my thing.

The bell rung and I got up to leave.

"Mr. Howell," Mr. Lester called to me as I was about to exit the room. "I need to see you. Close the door."

I closed the door after everyone had left. "Take a seat," he said with a sigh. I picked up a chair and sat it in front of his desk. He looked up at me. His bright blue eyes were framed by glasses that matched the color of his black hair perfectly. He was pretty young; 22, 23 maybe. "Dan, we need to talk about this," he opened a folder and slipped me a piece of paper. I looked at it. zeros and the word incomplete were neatly scattered all over the paper next to some text. "This is your grade for this semester's history course and I'll say, I'm not pleased at all. You have almost all missing assignments and all your quizzes and tests have been F's. What's going on Dan?"

I smirked a little at the fact that Mr. Lester thought I cared. Me caring about school? Ha! That's rich! "Listen, Mr. Lester," I said sliding the paper back in his direction. "I'm not what you'd call an... 'A student'. School just isn't my thing." I've always had this reputation around with the teachers as the "sympathy pass". They'll feel bad because I tell them I have family problems (even though I don't) and they secretly curve some of my test scores to fit a passing course grade. Guess Mr. Lester just hadn't been told yet by the other teachers.

"That's not a valid excuse for failing," he said his voice a little more stern. "You're 18 for goodness sake! You're going to be graduating soon! You need to take school more seriously or else you're going to regret it in the future."

I leaned over and put my hand on his shoulder making him jump. He probably wasn't expecting me to do this. "I'm not sure if you've heard," I said trying to sound genuinely sad. "But I've been having family troubles at home."

Mr. Lester's face instantly changed from serious to concerned. "I-I'm so sorry to hear that Dan," he said, his brows curving up. "If you don't mind me asking, what kind of problems are going on at home?"

"Uhh..." I wasn't prepared to answer this question. They never asked me this before. "Uh, life problems?" Ugh! I'm so bad at making up stuff like that on the spot! I tried to look and sound sad, but it was too late, Mr. Lester had caught on to my lie. He looked at me, his facial expression instantly changing from a look of concern to anger in a split second.

"Dan," he said, his voice slightly raised. "I'm calling your parents and setting up a meeting date to discuss your grades." I didn't know how to respond, this had never happened before.

"Mr. Lester, there's no need to rush into anything so soon. I-I mean we coul-"

"Daniel, I'm calling your parents and there's nothing you can do about it!"

Shit. I can't have my parents knowing about this. I can't have the other teachers knowing about this. I could get kicked out of school. What the hell am I going to do now.

"Go now, I have another class I have to teach."

I got up and slowly walked towards the door, still thinking about what I was going to do.

"Oh, and Dan," He called after me as I turned around. "For the future, I don't appreciate being lied to." I nodded, my face probably had an obviously sunken expression on it as I left the classroom.

•••

It was after school. I decided that going back to Mr. Lester's room and apologizing might help me in the slightest. If my parents found out I was failing a class they'd beat me half to death (not really, they'd just get hella pissed off).
