INVESTIGATIONS OF DCI BAXTER AND DR HIDE: THE BURNT CLUE

A New DCI

Kirk and Amber sat outside Wallace’s office the next morning. Worry had struck them both and they did not say a word. A big booming voice was heard from the office, “Enter now.” Kirk got up and turned and put his hand up to stop Amber coming too.

     “This is my fault.” He explained. Amber still tried to stand but Kirk pushed her back in her seat and smiled falsely. “Trust me on this.” He said calmly. Kirk pushed open the glass door to Wallace’s office in dread. Wallace was squeezed into his chair at his desk with his fingers together in front of him.

     “Sit.” He ordered sharply. Kirk sat down on the chair on the other side of the desk. “I thought long and hard about this, as you know.” He got up and walked over to a globe on book shelf. “I am going to give the job of DCI to you and DI to Amber.” He spun the globe and looked down at Kirk.

     “What about David?” Kirk asked delicately.

     “Now David I’m not sure about.” He said. “I think I am going to make him your investigatory advisor and give him a raise on his pension.” He said quietly in disbelief of what he had just said. “Leave.” he ordered wiping the sweat off his forehead with a hanky. Kirk got up and walked out of the office in joy.

     Amber was still sat outside the office watching her feet swing beneath her. She looked up when she heard Kirk arrive. “We get the jobs.” Kirk said answering Amber’s glair.

     “And David?” she asked.

     “He has become my investigatory advisor and has got a raise on his pension.”

     “Well that sounds fair…” I voice said from the distance. Kirk looked around to see who it was. He could just make out David’s outline in the shadows. “I deduced that would happen.” he said to annoy Kirk. David then stepped into the light and winked.
