Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that has a large impact on the behavior, thinking, and feelings of the victim. Symptoms range from moderate to severe and the first signs are typically seen in ages 16- 30 years old. One might develop schizophrenia because it runs in the family, but there are many known cases where the disorder is not hereditary. There are few treatments for this disorder but if classified with schizophrenia an individual more often than not goes through many therapies to help cope with every day challenges. Schizophrenia affects psychological health and instigates self-harm, inability to have an education, and may lead to other mental disorders.

Schizophrenia cases are uncommon as an adult but rare as a juvenile. The symptoms and signs of schizophrenia have three categories that they range from, positive, negative, and cognitive. Positive symptoms are physical behaviors not generally seen in healthy people, often known as "losing touch" with reality. Hallucinations, delusions, unusual and dysfunctional ways of thinking, and agitated body movements are positive symptoms. Negative symptoms are the disruptions to normal behaviors and emotions. Reduced expression of emotion by means of facial expressions and or voice tone (also known as the "flat effect"), reduced feelings of enjoyment in everyday life, and difficulty beginning and prolonging activities are negative effects. Cognitive symptoms are the subtle to extreme effects that range differently in each subject matter. Poor ability to understand information and make decisions, trouble focusing or paying attention, problems with the ability to use information immediately after learning it are all cognitive symptoms.
