Personal Masquerade

I have a mask for every day, every hour
a suitcase full, being dragged behind me like a ball and chain
sometimes on my back
Like Atlas holding up the world
My legs slowly sinking into the soft sand, the tide rising.

I have a mask for every feeling; every persona has their own set of masks, except one
Robin
He still dresses up like super hero's
the purity of a 6 year old mind

I remember my first mask, like the first kiss I ever had
Scary and wet
Tears streaming down my face when I am first told to shut up
'you have been talking to much' they say
'I don't care' they say
My super hero costume slipping off, shot through the heart
I thought superman was bullet proof?

My first mask didn't fit
Slipped sometimes
my true face showing
scaring the locals
'Frankenstein child' they shouted
They had no idea

No one knows my true face now
the mask gliding on my face
like nail polish over a base coat
Smooth
No one seeing how scared the nail truly is
No one knows my true face

Except you...
