I walked down the boardwalk in Santa Clara, passing by druggies and surfers, goths and hipsters. I look up and check the lost wall. That's what I call it. It's a wall that people tend to put up posters of missing people on. I scanned over it and find a new flyer.
MISSING! Vernon Beasley
Hey I remember this guy. He was a guard at the board walk. It's a shame to see that...they got him. I get chills from the thought and shake it off. I walk into the comic book shop and make my way over to the Flash comics.
"Hey, look who decided to show up," I hear.
"I'm here for a comic book and for a comic book only. If you care to talk to me about you know what, I suggest that the two of you give up and get out of my face," I remark, not looking up from the comic I was flipping through.
"Awh 'cmon Randi we just wanted to say what's up," Alan said as he re-stocked comic books.
"Unless you were considering joining us again," Edgar says hopefully. I give him an annoyed look, and put the comic back on the shelf before walking to another part of the store. That was useless though, because the two just followed me. Typical.
"Why not join us again? I know you had a bad experience the last time, but don't we all? How about you give it another chance?" Edgar pleads.
"How about I say no, and you guys can quit bringing it up and let me look for a comic book in peace?" I retort.
"Alright we'll stop bringing it up. But really, how's life been?" Alan asks. I shrug.
"The same it's always been I guess," I say with a shrug. I look over at the doorway to see some loudly dressed kid walk in and start to look at comic books. "Jesus look over there at the fashion plate."
"Says the one who dresses like a boy," Edgar mumbles.
"Shut it bandanna-man."
"Whatever. I'm gonna get a closer look at this kid," Edgar says as he makes his way over, eyeing him down. I look over at Alan, who continues to re-stock comic books, but also begins to stare at him.
"Yeah, because staring creepily at the poor guy isn't horrifying at all," I say to myself as I continue to look through comics. I glance over and see the boy notice that they're watching him. He uncomfortably walks to the other side of the store, but being the idiots they are, Edgar and Alan follow him.
"Got a problem, guys?" He asks.
"Just scoping your civilian wardrobe," Edgar points out.
"Pretty cool, huh?"
"For a fashion victim," Alan remarks. I mentally face palm at how creepy they're being.
"Listen, buddy, if you're looking for the diet frozen-yogurt bar, it went out of business last summer," Edgar says. I sigh.
"What a dweeb," I say under my breath.
"Actually, I'm looking for a Batman #14," The boy explains.
"That's a very serious book man-"
"Only five in existence."
"Four, actually. I'm always looking out for the other three...Look. You can't put the Superman #77s with the #200s. They haven't even discovered red kryptonite yet. And you, uh, you can't but the #98s with the #300s, Lori Lemaris hasn't even been introduced."
"Damn," I say out loud while hidden behind a comic book. Edgar looks over and gives me a glare. I really am impressed, though.
"Where the hell are you from, Krypton?" Edgar asks.
"Phoenix, actually. But lucky me, we moved...here." Edgar walks over to where I'm standing and lightly pushes me aside so he can grab Vampires Everywhere!
"Take this," He says as he hands it to Phoenix boy. He studies it for a bit before handing it back to Edgar.
"I don't like horror comics."
"You'll like this one, Mr. Phoenix. It could save your life," Edgar hands it back to him. I look up and see a group of punks grab and comic book and run.
"Um Edgar, Alan, you might wanna go run after them," I say.
"Hey! Come back here!" They say as they run off to chase the thieves. Phoenix boy looks back down at the comic book, and puts it back on the shelf. I walk over to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
"If I were you, I'd listen to them and read the comic." I walk out of the store and down the boardwalk.
"Wait! Wait a sec!" I turn around to see Phoenix boy running after me. I stop and let him catch up.
"What do you want?" I ask as I start to walk again with him next to me.
"What do you mean I should listen to them?" He asks. I sigh.
"It means listen to them and read the damn comic. It can be real life saver."
"How do you know?"
"I...I just do, okay?" I say without making eye contact with him. Memories of my face nearly being torn off by a blood sucker ran through my head. I take a deep breath and try to push it away for now.
"Okay then. Well I'm Sam Emerson," He says as he sticks out a hand.
"Randi Walts," I reply without taking his hand for a handshake. He awkwardly puts his hand down. "I can tell you're new here. You better watch your back, Sam. You never know what could leap out at you from the dark."
"Huh?" He asks, but without answering, I make a turn and get engulfed into a crowd of people, leaving Phoenix boy dumbstruck.
