Prologue

It's been sixteen years.

Sixteen years since what, you're probably wondering.

Well, sixteen years ago, a disease broke out, killing three-fourths of the nation. This outbreak was thought to be only nationwide. 

We were wrong.

People traveled to different countries to get away from the virus, before the airports were closed and flights were cancelled to prevent the disease from spreading any further.

Some were infected on those flights. I guess you can figure the rest out on your own.

The outbreak was too much to control and soon governments everywhere were overrun. 

The world had become the victim of a new pandemic.

Scientists and doctors everywhere had no idea what caused the disease to go viral. Or let alone, what the disease even was.

Some rumors say it was God's wrath. Others say it was a paranormal curse. Some even blame the government for it, saying it was their plan to get rid of overpopulation.

Whatever it is, it killed us. 

It killed our families, our friends. It killed us, inside.

We were no longer the people we used to be. Humanity, and sanity, had been taken from us. Ripped from our lives. 

However.

A group of survivors thought of a solution. They built a wall. A large wall, hard to break through, or climb over.

A city for survivors to stay safe, and get away from the Danger Zone.

All the while killing the monsters that had once been called people. That had once been like us.

They named it Spes, after the Roman goddess of hope.

Because hope is exactly what we needed to hold onto. What we still need to hold onto.

Hope to find a cure. Hope to start our lives over. Hope to go back to the way life used to be.

My name is Sarah Paul.

And this is not a story about people rising from the dead.

This is a story about people who feel dead. Who are dead inside.

A story about humanity trying to fix and restore what once was ours.

And those Things out there, they're not the real monsters we have to be afraid of.

We are the real monsters. And we need to be afraid of ourselves.
