"Do you have your hat?"
"Yeah."
"Boots tied up?"
"Mhm."
"First aid kit ready? What about-"
"Vaughn, buddy, I'm fine."
Jeb gave a rough chuckle and grinned. Vaughn stopped talking and had a certain kind of face that you couldn't quite explain too well: half an embarrassed look, half an "I knew that" look. Vaughn cleared his throat and stepped back, leaning on his sleek black motorcycle and fixing his bright red cap, a habit he always had. The two were somewhere up north-they had been travelling across the country for so long that they had lost track of where they were a long time ago-and it was colder than ever. Vaughn balled his fists up and blew on them, his breath becoming soft puffs of white air. Jeb blinked and slipped his gloves off before handing them to Vaughn, who simply looked at them for a few seconds, before taking them and ever so gently sliding his hands through. He mumbled a quiet "thank you" before stuffing his hands into his pockets.
"Alright big guy, I think we're just about ready to head on out. And before we do anything else, yes, I promise to be careful."
"You always say that, and every time you do, you end up bleeding all over the place and I always have to be the one that takes care of you!"
"...Just get on your bike already."
They both gave each other a look and hopped onto their motorcycles, looking out on the cold dirt road ahead of them. The sun was starting to set and it was the perfect time to have a nice drive around the great wide nowhere. The last thing they heard was the somehow soothing rev of their bikes before getting lost in the scene.
Once the sky got dark, they slowed down until the only thing they saw were the shining stars, the pale moon, and the glowing neon signs of the quaint little town they had stopped in. Jeb pulled over near a motel and stretched.
"Real nice, ain't it?"
"What do you mean?"
"This whole place..it gives you a homey kind of vibe. Do you think that one day, once we're done with going out and seeing all the sights, that we could ever settle down in a nice town like this?"
They both got quiet, though after a few moments of comfortable silence, Vaughn smiled.
"Yeah. That sounds nice."
