The two went inside the building, the neon sign on the front reading "Home away from home motel". The inside had a warm lighting to it, and a friendly looking young girl sat on a chair near the entrance while a man stood at the front desk.
It was small, and Vaughn had to duck his head down most of the time just to fit himself in. He pushed his glasses up and spoke in an overly friendly voice, the kind that someone's mother would use when on the phone.
"Hello! Um, how much would it be to rent a room?"
The man looked up. Something was odd about him; he looked awfully young, maybe about 20 or so. The little girl had to be at least 8 years old.
"Huh? Oh, uh..don't worry about it."
"What? Are you sure?"
The young man nodded quietly and fished through a drawer at the desk. He pulled a little key out and slid it over, the worn out tag that jingled at the bottom reading a very faint "42".
"Just..uh..enjoy the room."
"Hm..well..thank you, young man."
"M-My name is Kenny."
"Kenny. Right."
Vaughn and Jeb gave each other a look. Something was strange, but they couldn't put their finger on it. But they decided not to pay any mind to it, and went down the hallway, which felt longer than it actually looked. Their room was on the very end.
Maybe they'd stay in the town for a while.

The next morning, the two had woken up to find themselves all cuddled up. Their legs and arms were tangled comfortably together and the first thing their sleepy eyes saw was each other.
"Mornin'.."
Jeb's normally loud, clear, always excited voice was now soft and raspy. He pulled himself up a little more and gave Vaughn a quick kiss, then got up and stretched. They both freshened themselves up and headed out the room, but paused.
Now the little girl was at the front desk.
She quietly drew with some crayons while sitting on a stool that looked taller than she was. She looked up at them, smiled, and then went back to coloring a cute little picture of bunnies and flowers.
"Hey..what are you doing out here all by yourself?"
The little girl shrugged.
"Cause I wanted to be, and Kenny let me."
Jeb raised a brow and looked at her.
"And where's Kenny?"
"He's at the library."
Vaughn and Jeb gave another look to each other.
"Vaughn, you stay here. I'll go look for Kenny."
And with that, Jeb fixed his jacket and went out the door.
